  1. With the E-30, could I record 30 minutes of something, play it back on a DVD-ROM, then tomorrow, record 30 minutes more, play it back on computer, etc? In other words, can you record segments, and play them back on a computer, to view your progress?

    Thanks

  2. I don't think so. I am not positive, but I don't think the format of the content written to a DVD-R meets and standard. It is only after the disc is finalized that DVD-ROM and stand along DVD players will read it.

You can always play it back in the recorder - but I don't expect you will have much luck elsewhere.

  3. Right, that's correct.

However, I'm not sure why you'd want to play it on a computer anyway. You can "check your progress" by playing it on the Panasonic, if you really want to.

Note you can do the same thing with DVD-R as well: I routinely record intermittent things to the DVD-R (like Simpsons episodes) and don't finalize for a month or so. When I'm done the disk plays fine on all my standalone players.

  4. You must finalize the burn on the panasonic before you can view it on other DVD or computer; thus, you can not burn 30min and then view it on the computer then burn 30min. You can only burn 30min and not finalize it, view it on the E30, then burn other 30min, etc.

  5. mkelly,
I have question on how you finalize DVD-R on the computer.
I have accidentally burn a few DVD-R without finalizing it, my Pioneer DVD player can play them but not other DVD players (at my relatives). How do you finalize those DVD-Rs ?

  6. If we're talking about the Panasonic you don't finalize it on a computer, you finalize it on the Panasonic. It's on the disk menu (the other option on the menu is to enter a title for the disk).

  7. mkelly,
I knew that (had Pan E30 for sometimes, did not like it and return). DVD burner software also allows to burn without finalizing disc. I accidentally created a few like this. Bummer.

  8. If you're saying you created some open DVD-Rs with the Panasonic you had for a while but now you don't have it, yes, that is indeed a bummer. If it were me I'd just go to Best Buy or Radio Shack and finalize them there (they are usually good about letting you play with the machines, particularly at Best Buy, and I suspect you could spend the few minutes it would take). Alternately you could buy one with return privedges, if you can't find a friend with one.

I have both the Panasonic as well as the Sony DRU500 burner, but I know of no way to finalize disks created on the Panasonic on another burner, nor would I suspect there would be any easy way of doing so.

If you get truly desperate you can always send me the disks with return postage and I'll do them for you -- no big deal for me other than the time to go to the Post Office.

If you record on DVD-RAM disc, then yes (although you would need a DVD-ROM that is capable of reading DVD-RAM disc).

  10. hi mkelly,
thanks for the offer. However, the un-finalized discs I created was done with my PC/DVD writer, not the Pan-E30 (I always finalize them to view them on other DVD players).

  11. In that case you have no problems -- since your PC/DVD burner can read them (whether they are finalized or not) just copy them to your hard drive and create some more DVDRs that *are* finalized. You'll be good to go.
