.avi to dvd

hi all can somebody please help me.
i am downloading .avi's and am trying to convert them to dvd
i have uncompressed the sound with both avi2vcd audio compressor and virtualdub.
i then convert using tmpgenc however the sound is out of synch after about 25 minutes.
i have found a workaround from this site adding 3 seconds of silence using goldwave but what am i doing wrong in the first place.
can anybody point me to a guide as i am at my wits end.
