What format do I get exactly out of my digital videocamera via firewire? I thought its a kind of mpeg2.
Can I use it directly to burn SVCD or something or is it necessary to re-encode the whole .avi or can it converted without that long-lasting process?

You get an AVI file that uses DV compression. It's not mpeg-2. But, it is similar to mpeg-2 with only 'I' frames. Bitrate is fixed at 25Mbps, so it uses up a lot of disk space quickly. Yes, you will need to re-encode.
