you dont have to encode anything just do this if you installed an xvid codec go to start and theres a folder that says XVID and a program within the folder that says FOURCC Change or something like that. click there. now open the xvid and on the 2 boxes that say xvid click on the drop down arrows and put divx and then put apply. and thats it it only takes about half a second. and now you can encode in TMPGEnc or other programs that have trouble playing or encoding xvid.

Downloaded AVI -> probably bad frames and other stuff that makes it hard to encode into anything else (beside the fact that reencoding from XviD to DivX will only make the quality worse).

  5. Just out of curiosity, why convert?

  6. I agree with RzSwede. Why convert? A good quality Xvid is as good as the equivilent in Divx! Plus any form of conversion will only degrade, even if slightly.

Not quite sure what you are trying to do anyway? When you say 'burn' using Nero are you just trying to copy the .avi to a CD/DVD as data or are you trying to create a VCD/DVD?

hey i can see your a new member so im kinda guessing your trying to make the movie for dvd right. if so you can use a program called TMPGenc to encode the movie to vcd. or whatever other thing you want. but TMPGEnc doesnt accept XVID it always freezes so just do the AVIC Four CC Change thing i told you it wont loose any quality it just changes the header from an XVID codec to a DIVX codec. it doesnt loose any quality and it does it in about 1 second. ok now after you make it a divx insert it into TMPGEnc and try to encode. but you can only put 80 minutes on one cd. so make sure you clip the movie in 2 parts if its longer than 1 hour and 20 minutes. plus if its an XVID it probably has AC3 sound which is always a problem you will have to go into complications that you probably wont learn how to fix quickly.

  8. I have experienced similar problems in trying to convert to DivX v5 in order to burn a DivX CD which will play in a stand-alone DVD player. Did you sort this one out Bugs? I have the same problems when trying to upgrade from DivX v3 files which are not compatible with the DVD player either.
I'm not sure whether I have a separate XVid program installed on my PC(though I can play XVid files) and am not 100% clear on your advice, Cecilio, so would appreciate a little more detail. Sorry to be a pain but I'm new to this.

  10. Thanks, Cecilio. I must have had a XVid player but not the codec (or it certainly didn't appear in "All Programs). Anyway downloaded the same software and it appears to work perfectly. Didn't have the same problems burning DivX CD in Nero either. Haven't yet had a chance to check out the quality in my DVD player but will let you know. Thanks again, Anth.
