  1. I have been capturing TV shows to my hard drive using an Adaptec Video interface, creating beautiful mpeg files in the process. I then split up this file into smaller segments using MPEG2CUT shareware so I can remove the commercials, and then rejoin all of them using MOVIEJOINER software.

Sometimes the final mpeg file is still too large to fit on a DVD+RW disk. I want to use DVD Shrink to cut down on the size of this file, but that software will only accept .ifo files to start with.

Is there a relatively simple way to convert the mpeg file into .ifo and .vob files so I can complete my mission?

    Thanks.

You can use the TMPGEnc wizard to adjust your bitarte to make your video fit on one DVD-RW.

i do basically the same thing...capturing to MPEG2. then use TMPGEnc to remove commercials; then AUTHOR a new dvd using ULead MF2; then shrink the completed show using INSTANTCOPY, then nero to burn to DVD video...

I have also done some good VHS captures this way.

    Works GREAT!

  4. THAT was exactly what I was looking for - software to create the IFO, VOB, etc. files from an MPEG format. Ulead MF2 does the trick. Thanks, MASTERSMURFIE (and TOMMYKNOCKER), I appreciate the posts.

  5. Mastersmurfie - Just worked on an mpeg file with Ulead MF2 and discovered the audio was behind the video by about 3-4 seconds. Tried different settings but had the same result. Original mpeg works perfectly when played on my pc.

Any suggestions to fix this problem? I have the latest updates loaded from Ulead.

    Thanks.

Was this an original MPEG (was it captured as MPEG)? Or an MPEG made from an AVI file? If it was AVI first, you should try to remove the audio first, then convert the video and separate audio with TMPGenc. Check the guides for AVI2MPG conversion as I do not remember the exact steps. I have been capturing direct to MPEG2 and then convering to DVD-no probs (except the occasional user error) yet.

  7. No, it was a TV show that ended up being a very large file. In order to use Shrink 2 or DVD2One to reduce its size, I need to reformat the mpg file into VOB's and IFO files. That's what I used Ulead MF2 for. Once using that and checking some of the individual sections, the sound is off by about 2 or three seconds at that point.

Can't submit any tech questions to Ulead until I buy the software (using free 30 trial right now).

i have uleads video studio 6 or 7. i don't use it because of the a/v sync problem u describe

    it capture perfectly

but it misses the ball on making dvd files

i have neo dvd plus, which happen to be the opposite (don't capture in sync , but it will burn an on sync file in sync)

i use ulead studio to capture, neodvd to burn (actually i now use powervcr to capture, now that i hack the registry to enable long capture files, but that another story)

    @RedC

What are you using to capture? I have just captured tonights 2nd episode of SG-1 in MPEG2, with ATI AIW 128 PRO-MMC version 7.6, edited out commercials with TMPGenc, and converted to DVD files with MF2 and no problems with audio at all...audio is all in sync, but some "jumpiness" in the final outpur-this was because stupid me had email up while the capture was going on...

it seems like almost every other thing that's running on your system affects the capture...

To answer your question directly, you need to re-encode your file at a lower bitrate, that is the only way to reduce file size. Lowering the resolution might be a good idea depending on what it's at right now and how much lower you need to drop the rate, higher resolutions at low bitrates look like crap. There is a Bitrate Calculator in the Tools section, or TMPGEnc has one built-in if you use the project wizard.

Look in the Convert section for a guide on using TMPGEnc (or any other encoder), that's where you need to start.

Keep in mind, re-encoding always causes a drop in quality, so does lowering the bitrate, so does lowering the resolution.
