  1. Hi all,

Can anybody help?! I am the only one out of my mates who buys vcds. Thats not the problem but when they lend them to mates who copy them - thats annoying!!

I want to find out if it is possible to Protect a VCD after burning it. I.e. So that nobody else can copy it.

    Thanks

  2. There is no way to effectively stop a VCD from being copied.

If you want some further discussions on the matter I recommend a forum search because I remember a really good topic was had on this exact topic a month or so ago. But basically the final outcome was, that unless you are dealing with morons, then the disc will be copied.

Any DVD/DVDR/DVDRW/CD/CDR/CDRW can be effectively copied. Certain disks have errors built in as part of the copy protection, but you can image these and mount the file as a virtual drive.

So the answer is no, no way to keep from disks from being copied.

  5. Wow, you guys may have been a little hard on him. Sounds to me like he's trying keep people from warezing stuff. Was there not something called "freelock" a while back that had a guide with it. Sure, it won't keep everyone from copying stuff but it may keep the average beer swilling buddy from copying.

Unless he's ultra-sensitive to plain facts, no one was being hard in any way, shape or form.

Just telling him that the basic answer is NO.

  8. I remember watching on TechTV a while ago and they were showing a program that was able to write bad sectors to a disk. I can't remember the show, date, or name of the program. Maybe search on their website? It would stop someone from copying it if they were not trying hard.

Wow, this was a very un-informative post.

No. Almost every person that knows how to copy also knows what they are doing. You'd only stop a nth percentage of the people you are trying to keep it away from.

If I can see it, it is mine.
I'm not online anymore. Ask BALDRICK, LORDSMURF or SATSTORM for help. PM's are ignored.

  11. Besides the question wasn't 'can I stop most people or the average person.' It's a digital medium, and there is no way to stop people from copying a VCD.

I don't think anyone was being hard on the guy. He asked a question and got an honest answer. What more do you think should have been said/done?

I guess that is the sentence I had the issue with. Looking back at it, I guess I probably overreacted a little. I don't know why I took it with a negative tone. Maybe it was early, etc, etc. I guess I was just thinking about the same questions being asked every week (like the one about what resolution you should capture at) and wondering why this guy got told to "look it up." With all the warnings being issued lately about warez related stuff, I was like "this poor guy is asking how he can prevent it." Oh well, I'm rambling.....

  13. I was just referring him to look up a post from a few months ago that contained a few methods of 'protecting' a VCD. It mentioned all the ways that you could go about it (bad sectors, free lock etc) so I thought it would be a good guide.

Overall though the tone of that discussion and all previous ones on VCD protection have all come up the same, that it is not possible to protect a VCD effectively.

You forgot to mention, "so that we can backup our material." After all, getting around copy protection for any other reason might offend somebody.

You don't need a technical solution.

You need to look your mates straight in the eye and tell them to stop being leeches.

If they want to watch your movies, they can bloody well go over to your place and bring the beer and chips! 8)
