I have a question about P2P file sharing. I have heard a lot lately about record companies going to sue individuals who share mp3s. My question is can they just search your whole computer for these mp3s or just the folder that you are sharing with kazaa, limewire. morphues, etc.?

  3. Here in the states if you're a bigtime file-uploader you can expect a visit from the feds, downloading copyrighted material is still illegal but the RIAA & MPAA are going after the sharers.
P.S...and yes they can search your computer and seize it(and you) with a search warrant.

I think they can search more that just your computer with a warrant. If a search warrant is issued, they can look in your bedroom, car, sockdrawer, basically anywhere on the premises. They just need evidence of probable illegeal activty (which would be VERY easy to get in the case of file sharing, can we say "IP Address"?).

    I am no lawyer though....

    just a thought....
what if your IP isn't dynamic?

  6. The first thing they will do is look in your shared folder of the p2p program you are using. If they find you have a large number of mp3 files that you shouldn't have then they will start further action against you.

Such things as getting your details from the ISP, obtaining search warrants against you and launching legal action.

    just as I thought.
all the more reason to actually BUY your music.

whats the fine? $250,000. Think of how much music you could buy with that money. More than what you could ever want!

And with Apple pioneering the 99 cents per song thing, I think that is the way to go. I mean come on, that is cheeper than some CDs and 100% of the songs are ones you want, unlike CDs that have a bunch you could care less about.

And they say it is coming to PCs sometime.

What if you were sharing 6000 songs that you own the rights to? Would they still sue, they you could throw it back in their faces??

Not if you wrote the songs and own the copyrights.

You know now that I think about it, buying the .mp4 yourself is no different from buying the cd and sharing it on the net
Oh well................... ITs a never ending battle

one day we will all be sitting in our rocking chairs with our plad blankets over our legs to keep the knee and hip replacements warm so they dont hurt and say

"remember when mp3 sharing was such a huge issue!"

Well if there were more than 3 or 4 good songs on a cd we wouldn't be stealing the music now would we....it's just a form of organized crime since it isn't like we are robbing the music stores...right?
