I am a noob when it comes to DVD ripping and i was wondering something.....
I have used the following drives to rip DVDs:
Toshiba SD-M1602
Pioneer DVR-A05
Sony DRU-510a
No matter what movies I use, when I use SmartRipper 2.41--the read speed never increases above 2.0x.
Why is that? Are there other rippers that will rip faster?
Please help.
Thanks.

I know for sure the Pioneer and Sony drives are (with provided firmware) are locked at ripping commercial DVDs at 2x max.
I have a liteon that I get an average of 7-8x when ripping dual layer DVDs and usually about 12x when ripping single layer. -
That may be true of the writer but I'm having sort of this problem with a friends TOSHIBA dvd-rom..it won't rip faster than 4.8 times -on the website it states this speed coincidentally for maximum playback from a DVD-R (not a commercial replicted disc)
SO, is this the first series of DVD-ROM that reads r at a slower pace and does the ripping program then MIS SENSE the commercial DVD as an "R"
so many questions!
this is whats printed about the TOSHIBA DEVICE on toshiba's website
2X DVD-RAM playback
16X DVD-ROM playback
4.8X DVD-R playback
Does this in fact explain why some DVD-ROM drives WON'T do smooth FastFoward on home-burned stuff!? (or Does the FAST FOWARD COMMAND ONLY WORK AT 1x during PLAY like all DVD-ROM Playback)
It means its faster to RE-RIP the whole disc rather than simply copy off a already ripped disc! if we can unlock it to RIP at advertised speeds, that is! -
don't rip with your burner
if your dvd-rom is the slow ripping culprit
they said something in an earlier post
about uninstalling the drive (or ide cable to the drive)
and letting window reinstalled it -

anyone else see these toshibhas max ripping not at published 16x but at the unnacceptably lower x of the recordable media (4.8?)? -
Buy a LiteON 163 or 166 DVD drive for about $39 or less online and you will be ripping at speeds up to 15x for single layer DVd's.

I have a Toshiba 1712 that I was able to unlock the ripping speed with a hacked bios. It depends on the DVD, but I've seen mine go as high as 10X. -
With a decent DVD-ROM, ripping speed is determined by the following:
Is the DVD Video locked by CSS algorithm?
Does it have macrovision?
Is it two layer?
Is the DVD scratched?
Very very roughly, consider the above three factors to slow the ripping speed by a factor of 2 each. The last one can drive you crazy.
Make your own tests and log the results (I've done it myself).
My Pioneer 116 DVD ROM has a rating of 16x and it reads at this speed DVD-ROM disks with large files. (small ones slow things down).
I have ripped unprotected, single layer DVD Video disks without macrovision at almost 13x sustained.
The typical dual layer, protected with CSS and Macrovision disk will start at 2.4X and goes faster as the laser goes to the edge of the disk and then drops when the second layer is read.
When ripping a commercial DVD, I'm happy to reach speeds of 5X.
I've also ripped scratched disks at almost 0.6~1.3X. Took ages and in the end I was thankful it finished without errors.
Also, don't worry about ultra DMA cables and settings. The transfer speed required to sustain ripping is so low that it won't cause the DVD to rip at 2X because of that. I've succesfully recorded 4X media with the IDE channel set to PIO Mode only. (Didn't want to do this, just forgot to reset the settings after flashing the DVDRW f/w).The more I learn, the more I come to realize how little it is I know. -
Thanks guys for that link. I updated the firmware on my Toshiba and now I peak at 14.1x and I average 9.2x ripping speeds!
