  1. Using Mpeg Encoder v1.3.1 to convert .avi to VCD format.

Completely converts all audio correctly BUT the video image stops at approx. 10 minutes toward the end of the file and the image stays frozen while the audio continues.

What am I doing wrong and how do I fix it?

What's your AVI source? Sounds like a crap AVI to me. Scan for and remove bad frames with VirtualDub. Then save as AVI direct stream. Use this new version of the AVI for encoding to mpeg.

Yep, fix your source. The VDUB method should be fine.
I'm not online anymore. Ask BALDRICK, LORDSMURF or SATSTORM for help. PM's are ignored.

  4. I'll try that. Thanks.

  5. Didn't work.

Does it with every avi I have, even ones I was able to encode with TPMGEnc.

Same thing exactly, last 10 mins or so of video is frozen. Any ideas?

I've got to have a setting wrong or something.

  6. SteyrAUG, 1st make sure the encoded mpg does not freeze at the same point while playing back on your computer. If it doesn't then it could be a media problem. Since CDRs are cheap, maybe you should try TDK. My JVC standalone player does not like cheap media at all but have no problems with quality media for VCDs and SVCDs.

  7. The AVI plays on my computer without error.

But once converted to mpeg or VCD the last 10 mins of video don't seem to encode correctly and this is before burning to a CDR.

That your AVI play fine using a media player doesn't say much about if the AVI is error free or not. Players seem to be much more forgiving that encoders. Try frame serving it from VirtualDub to your encoder.

  9. I have an even more strange problem... avi -> vdub -> frameserv with tmpgenc -> author with ulead -> burn with nero.

Plays perfect on my standalone dvd player... but not on the comp. Trying to copy it... gives me all coasters.... some copies well... but those freezes near the end on my standalone and computer!!

Tried to put the whole dvd on computer HD using DVD-decryptor... Many read errors near the end of the DVD.... but still... the first one i burnt..
    plays perfect on standalone....

If i only knew what i did... could make some money out of it.... kinda new security?!?

  10. SteyrAUG, This is a known bug in Mainconcept 1.3.1. This problem occurs
when you are changing the framerate, ie 25.00 -> 29.97. So if your movie is PAL then leave the output format as PAL. If the movie is NTSC Film, 23.97, then you need to do the pull down trick that is mention on the Mainconcept forum page. TMPG does these conversion with no problems, just slow. Here a link that talks about the Mainconcept bug:

Try another encoder. TMPGenc is free. Procoder is what I use for MPEG1.

OK that does seem to exactly describe my problem. However I get lost in the tech talk. How do I know if a movie is PAL or NTSC? And which settings do I need to change and to what values? How would I determine corret value settings in the future?

TMPG does NOT work on these AVI files. It freezes (the program that is) up so it is not a option.

MC Mpeg Encoder works but with the noted bugs.

This is a known bug with MainConcept MPEG Encoder 1.3.1 .........

I know, because I used to use this encoder, which did everything I wanted with great speed and great quality, until I was watching a DVD I burned and found that the video froze, but the audio played perfectly, roughly 10 minutes from the end

I thought it was a 'one off', so carried on using it, but checked the completed output on a few movies before burning to DVD, the vast majority of them had this problem, all about the same time

I emailed MainConcept customer support, with a huge loglist I had carefully noted with a movie that stopped in the same place no matter what settings I tried, and they mailed me back after a few days saying they had managed to reproduce the problem, and had fixed it, which will be in the next release of the encoder, but they said they can't give a date when this will be !!!!!

So, by this lack of update, I assume they are working on more bugfixes or testing or whatever

In the meantime I won't use that encoder, and have used TMPGenc Plus instead since then, its about 2-3 times slower, but at least it works everytime, for me at least ..............

And yes, I have used CCE, don't like it, can't do what I need/want out of an encoder, whereas MainConcept did, and TMPGenc Plus does, but slower

  14. This is the problem ur having when u load your file let be an AVI or a mpeg2 look at the info your will noticed a difference in video time and audio time. It about a 10 min. differences when u see this don't bother encoding it. I still haven't found out how to fix it but for some reason this happens. When I do see the differences I just use TMPGEnc or Procoder. I don't have a problem with those but it just take abit longer. Test it out and u will see the difference. If anyone knows how to fix this problem please let us know.

  15. OK so what is a good alternative?

Since Mpeg Encoder seems to have a definite bug with no available fix.

Also TPMGEnc Plus is good BUT the program freezes on some AVIs when I try and convert them.

I've got Roxio DVD Creator 6 but for the life of me can't figure it out. Also requires a screen size of 1024x768 which screws up the defaults for all my other programs.

So what is a good avi to mpeg decoder?
