hello, i'm still pretty new to this stuff so bare with me. i just recently ordered/received my 1st dvd writer: sony dru-510a. it's internal, but i hooked i up externally (via usb 2.0 enclosure kit). i had this external enclosure kit for an hp dvd writer(which a friend let me borrow so i could get the hang of the dvd creation process). the hp worked like a charm, the only few coasters were my fault(i've used rictek & memorex +r). i hooked up my sony and the craziness began.
first, i noticed nero did not recognize the burner. so i had to use recordnow max (came w/the burner) i figured there just probably has to be some sort of update. someone please let me know if i'm right.
second, i burned one dvd on the memorex w/the sony and it played fine on my phillips player. today i went to burn another movie the burn went through, but when i wanted to check it on my phillips dvd player in the living room it froze durning the "loading process" i knew the phillips plays memorex, i burned one before, but just to check it out i tried a rictek. same thing burns fine, doesn't play on my dvd player. the strangest part is that the disks play fine in my computer. i'm using the same brand etc... the only thing diff is the writer(although, as i mentioned before i did successfully burn one dvd w/the sony the day i received it).
please understand, i'm very new. if the answer is obvious, i apologize, i really tried researching the site for possible solutions.
please help
thanks

Troubleshoot time. First off I'm not a believer in putting a boxed DVD Burner in someone's external USB box. I would suggest putting it in the computer as Master. Secondly, what program are you using to decrypt, compress or author your DVD with? And are you talking about backing up store bought DVD's you own? Or DVD's you are authoring with MPEg or AVI files. Once we know this then we can address your Phillps DVD player.

sounds more like the disc has been burnt differently, did you happen to change any settings while burning?

thanks for your replies.
to answer jdizzy40: i wil probably go ahead and install the drive internally as you sugg. second, the original source of the video was captured avi from my canopus advc-100. i encoded to mpeg then authored in dvdlab. i've done this before a few times and the dvd's played in my phillips. like i said, i even successfully backed up a movie the same day i received the sony writer, and that plays in the phillips.
to answer w00tski: i'd have to say, i don't recall changing any settings. i did have to use recordnow max, b/c it came w/the burner and nero didn't recognize the new burner. so it's hard to say if i changed anything. actually, the 3rd test i did, i burned w/dvdlab just to see if that would make a diff. nothing.
i'll probably try installing the drive in the morning and let you guys know the outcome.
once again
thanks for your help -
hello, tried installing sony internally, still no luck. dvd completes but will not play in phillips. once again, plays in computer fine. i know one thing diff. i did this weekend before the problems. i downloaded the free canopus codec so that i wouldn't have problems opening up in tmpgenc or any other encoder. would that seriously make a diff? i've already used up 4 dvdr's, i'm thinking of buying a small pack of rw's so i don't ruin anymore. does anyone know other possibilities? burned dvd plays in computer fine, but no longer plays in phillips set top. using same media that was successful w/hp dvd writer and would play fine in set top player. so i know its not the media. i am thinking it's not the sony writer, obviously if it plays in computer fine then there's something diff about the info on the dvd that my set top player won't recognize. thanks for sugg. guys, any other sugg.?

I can think of 2 things that you should do before you start pulling your hair out.
1.Try to play the dvd's that wont play on your standalone DVD Player on someone else's DVD Player that is different than yours. It could just be your player. I know you said it was the same type of media that played the first time in your DVD Player but I always burn the same type of media and some will play on my XBOX and some will not. I dont watch any movies on my XBOX but I do test some out in the XBOX for compatibility.
2.Try using a different brand of media. I could have overlooked it but I didnt see that you stated if you were using + or - R (MEMOREX) I am not trying to start a flame war about + and - R but if you are using +R, try using -R and see it that plays on you standalone DVD Player.
GOOD LUCK,

hey, here's something that may help.
check out some of the reviews on the player in the DVD Players user comments. maybe some people are having problems with it too.
is there a difference in time? like the first DVD could be 15 minutes; the one that works and then the second one could be 30 minutes and u may change the bitrate.... -
thanks for everyone's replies. i think i'm narrowing down the problem. i tried a test capture w/my canopus & Movie Factory 2 and worked perfect on the phillips. then i took one of the shows that was on the disks that would not work, authored w/tmpgenc dvd author(instead of dvdlab), it worked on the standalone. how confusing? one problem that there was was on the new disk that did work was the audio & video were very out of sync. not talking seconds, but many minutes. i had cut that vob's commercials out w/mpeg2vcr. made sure not to reencode and came out w/horrible end result.
conclusion (so far)
1. not the sony-seems to burn fine even though nero is not recognizing(what do i do for that, i tried looking around even went to ahead site, could not find info)
2. i did try to capture highest bitrate, which probably should not have to considering the source is satellite.
3. i need to find out why mpeg2vcr failed to keep sync(it's the newest version and from what i understand the sync is more stable if not re-encoded.
thanks for all your input, if someone can help w/getting nero to recognize the sony it would help.
