LG and IOmega both have a model coming that does DVD-+R/RW and DVD-RAM. Pioneer also will support DVD-+R/RW with their A06 model coming soon.

Check out www.cdfreaks.com for news and anouncements (sorry, no tests yet).

CCL in Bradford strongly recommended the Freecom FX-50 external writer as an alternative. Can't find any reviews or Forums information/postings relating to this unit though. I might go the NEC1300A route and abandon the firewire capability

  6. I think the freecom only writes to DVD+. I would much rather be able to write to DVD- if a can't get a dual format writer.

No, the Freecom FX-50 is both '+' and '-' See: http://www.freecom.com/objects/00002195.pdf

This makes it all the more stranger given the well publicised supply problems of the Sony unit. If, on paper, the Freecom is equally specced you would expect them to have sold more.

  8. another problem with the freecom is that it needs USB 2 or firewire connections. I have neither. Dam sony why do they do this to us.
