  1. In the tools section tmpgenc is listed as freeware, but it appears that the version I downloaded is only good for 30 days (count down timer). I am a newbie so this may be a dumb question...Thanks.

The MPEG 2 encoder is only good for thirty days. This is because MPEG 2 technology is licensed so you must purchase the software if you want to keep it. You can use the MPEG 1 encoder as much as you want however, and this encoder is superb.

I've searched the forum about this topic and this question seemed to be the closest one to answer my question.

So just to get this straight for my purposes, even though the MPEG 2 version has past it's trial, can i still encode an avi to mpg to make a vcd compliant cd?

I have had tmpgenc for while now and before the trial, i could convert my avi files to mpg easily and it worked great. Throughout the process, i could preview the movie and everything. Now, when i go to convert a file, the preview screen is black even though it seems to be converting. Is it still converting?

Also, can i still convert using the mpeg 1 freeware instead of the full version? Will it make a difference in the finished product? Sorry for all the questions but i just wanted to be sure on this because i have a couple of files i need to convert.

Thanks in advance for any help.

P.S. Is being able to convert with mpeg 1 a matter of the plug-in or settings that i've seen here on the forums?

there is a tmpmgenc mpeg2 plugin available on this site i belileve. look to your left. you can always make vcd with tmpgenc. if your screen is black/blank you may be missing a codec. check your movie with gspot to see what codec you need. the encoder screen will be black if you do not choose to preview while encoding, all frames or thinned frames

  6. Thanks a lot. I'll try that when i get home and let you know how it worked. If not, there's a lot of useful information on this site so i'm sure i'll figure something out. Thanks again.

  7. Everything works perfectly. I changed my enviromental settings like i've read on the forums and i also changed my preview options. Everything is encoding just like before.

    Thanks for the help.
