Hello,
I have read many topics regarding this drive, but none that match my problem. I just received a new computer that I had this DVD burner installed in before I bought it. I cannot get it to record! I have tried Nero, Xcopy, WinOnCD, and many more. The problem is that NONE of these software see it as a recordable DVR writer. I am running Windows XP Home. The drive is recognized and listed in Windows as the NEC ND1000A DVD+RW. When I tried it with Nero for example, in the toolkit and tests, it lists it as the right name and with DVD+R. Howevere, when I try to record data to it, it only lists the "image recorder" as an option and not the drive. Xcopy does the same???
This is getting frustrating. Any help is greatly appreciated.

I would go into windows device manager locate the drive then remove it from there. Now reboot and let windows recognize the drive and re-install the correct drivers. Hopefully that may fix it.

Well, I have tried atleast 5 different pieces of software, and I think most of them were the latest versions. I have uninstalled it and let windows find it again. It is XP Home, so I do not think there are any other drivers for it available, atleast none that I know of. the funny thing is that if i go into device manager, it recognizes the drive as the correct name, make, and model. Its just that NONE of the burning software sees it as a writer. For instance, I tried Nero ver 5.5.9.9.
BTW, I have also already ran the aspi driver pack from adaptec. I think it 4.1.7.2a. It didnt seem to do anything.
Do you guys think it could be software, or is it bad hardware? It plays everything just fine! -
your version of nero is to old it does not work with the nec, just update it with the newest one.

Ok. First, thanks alot to everyone that posted or emailed. I appreciate the help. I have sorta got it working now. I did most everything that everyon suggested with no success. The thing that worked was that I took a closer look at DVD Xcopy. In the Programs shortcuts, there was a selection like "Install Drivers". I ran that process, and rebooted. After that, it will recognize and write to the drive. Now I have another problem. Actually, I dont know if it is a problem.
Here is the issue:
When I put in a DVD movie into my non-writer and a blank DVD in the writer, Xcopy see's whats going on. I start with the process of making a backup copy of the original DVD. Xcopy then shows all "tracks" or "titles" on the original DVD. According to Xcopy, the largest track is the movie and all the rest are features and things that are not important. It says that you should only need the one track. Besides, the whole DVD was like 7.5Gb and my DVD+R will only hold 4.7Gb. So, I selected the largest track to copy which was 4.2Gb. It recorded fine. However, I cannot get the DVD to play in any DVD player, not even the drive that recorded it. It splashes the DVD Xcopy logo about copyright stuff and thats it. It freezes.
Any ideas about what I am missing?

Just download and install DVDshrink (look in the tools section of this site), it's free and works better than DVDX Copy IMO. Only problem is it doesn't burn so you will need to sort out your burner software problem. I suggest using RecordNow Max which goes for $39 at CompUSA.

So are you saying that the DVDshrink will shrink the whole dvd to fit on a 4.7Gb DVD, then burn it to the disk with another program, like Xcopy?
My concern there is which software to use to burn. I have not tried any since it started working with Xcopy, but before I did the driver load with Xcopy, NO other sw would recognize the burner.

Why don't you go to 321 Studio's web site and download DVDXCopy Express. Sounds like you are using the DVDXCopy full movie version. And no after using DVD Shrink it creates a folder with all the files you need to burn with a writing program like Nero or as mentioned Record Now. Hopefully you've got Nero recognizing your drive. I use Nero Express, available for download on their site.

Ok, if I do use DVD Shrink and shrink the DVD and then burn it to a DVD, will any DVD player be able to read the data just like a normal DVD?

Yes and No. There is no one answer to your question. You need to look at the DVD Player information to the left. What you need to understand is this, you are going to need to find out what works for you, but don't assume that when it does work on your Set top DVD player, that it will work on your grandma's, friends or sister's DVD Player. After buying my first DVD Burner over a year ago I found out that my APEX DVD Player would not play them (it was a 49.00 l-cheapo). So I took some disks I burned to a major electronics store and tested each one until I found the one I liked and of course played all the media I feed to it. My Sony set top DVD player plays all media, but my sister's will only play - media. I stick to buying 3-different manufactuers media that I know works for me each time. I hope this explains the question you had a little better.
