As I cannot persuade/fool my DVD author software into accepting a mixed format DVD (NTSC and PAL), I suppose I'll have to convert either all the AVI's to NTSC or PAL, I'm not bothered which
Is it easier to convert from NTSC (29.97) to PAL (25) or PAL (25) to NTSC (29.97), DVD diemnsions format obviously
If so, anybody got/done a guide for converting from PAL to NTSC (I think this will be easier, as I won't lose any frames, just gain frames)
I'll be using TMPGenc Plus (latest version), and I believe BeSweet/BeSweetGUI is also needed to also convert the audio track, but I do have access to CoolEdit Pro v2.0, which ever is better at doing the audio conversion
Any help will be appreciated, thanks

Steptoe,
I look forward to reading any guide about it, which actually would provide ggod results. I spent the last 2 weeks (nights and we), trying to convert avi PAL file into NTSC mpeg2 file for DVD. I have tried converting the avi file from PAL to NTSC and the mpeg2 file from PAL to NTSC. As far as I know, there is no solution providing good results. Why? because PAL has 25fps while NTSC enjoys 29.97 fps. The 3 methods I tried are as follows:
- converting the avi file from PAL to NTSC, with avisynth. You need to write a small script to basically create new frames when converting from 25fps to 29.97 fps. The avi or the m2v result, when recompressing with TMPGEnc, gives resolution problems.
- converting the m2v PAL file into a m2v NTSC file with avisynth. Same problem as above.
- converting the avi file to NTSC 23.974 fps file, apply a 2:3 pulldown. But then you need to adjust the audio. Resulting quality is, from my little experience, barely better than the previous one.
Some software exists to convert from PAL to NTSC, bu I wonder how it can give better results than the 3 solutions mentioned above since that, whaterver your method, you still need to either create or delete frmaes. Do not despair, there must be a way.... -
this is too easy. open file in viirtual dub. frameserve to tmpgenc. choose template of your choice ntsc/pal. done deal

Okay, I though about trying frameserving, but what about the audio ??
Will this need to be converted, or is the frameserving going to alter the audio as well ??
Also, what was the software to convert from PAL to NTSC ??
I know there is software that will convert DV PAL to DV NTSC, but if you're source is a 'standard' AVI PAL, then how's that going to work, as it ain't DV PAL to start with
I don't really want to convert AVI PAL to DV PAL, then convert DV PAL to DV NTSC, then convert DV NTSC to NTSC, wayyyyyy to much messing about
I'll give the frameserving a go overnight, see what happens ............. -
Most of my experience is doing PAL to NTSC since I live in the USA and we use NTSC. You can do NTSC to PAL but if you have a TV that can do NTSC then you probably are better off going from PAL to NTSC than the other way around.
I could go into ALL kinds of details but I will direct you to a couple of links that should help you out:

The first LINK above is for a website that covers the subject with specific step-by-step (well more or less) directions. The second LINK above is from a FORUM THREAD on this very website where I and others (including the author of the website in the first LINK) discuss the details of the process in more detail. That FORUM THREAD more or less fills in the gaps that exist in the (otherwise excellent) website that the first LINK takes you too.
Good Luck

frameserve the file and the tmpgenc will convert the audio, or you can use an external audio source. it is up to you
directions to frame serveopen file in vdub. click on file/start frameserver
it will prompt you to name file. name file this
video.vdr.avi. save to desktop.
open tmpgenc locate video.vdr.avi. use this. choose template. start encoding.
you must run auxsetup.exe in vdub folder and choose avi client before you frameserve for the first time. after that you dont have to anymore
try it you will like it. -
