  1. I just got the parts for my new computer yesterday.

Now i have buildt it P4, 512ram and asus motherboard 2 hdd

    1. 30GB maxtor hdd.
    2. 120GB western digital hdd.

Everything works great untill i try to shutdown and then start it again.
    (not restart.)
It shuts down. but when i press the on (i dont wait for anything) it start, but with only a black image. Nothing happends.

I turn it off again and on after 30 sec or so maybe it comes or maybe not.

I messed around a bit with the jumpers but it works now. And 1 time the CD-ROM dissapeared :P

I use the new serial ata133 cables for both hdd and cd-rom. both hdd is on IDE 0 and cd-rom alone on IDE 1

Any computer gurus who has a idea?

    THANKS! 8)

  2. Make sure the case power is not connected to reset on the mobo and the case reset in not conneceted to the mobo power.

Haha, glad you scrapped the idea of a celeron and went for a P4.

Good Luck on your new PC.

    VCD,
I don't think you have to worry too much about switches. Both are make/break switches, instantaneous, just shorts. If they are wrong, you would push the reset to turn on, power to reset, change the connectors, but you say they work "sometimes", so that is not the problem. And they are shorting switches, so polarity doesnt matter HERE, elsewhere, yes.
Which board did you buy? Can DL the manual to see what might be wrong.
Most boards don't use many jumpers, except for maybe clock/RAM speed, anymore.
With 2 drives and CD-ROM, I would put the large drive on the other IDE by itself, and CD-ROM as slave to OS HDD, same if you have a CD burner, and burn from the 120. If you have both, new game.
Tell us what board, anything else relevant.

Check the power connector from the PS to the MB. You might be a little loose or not "snapped" in. While you're in there, verify that all the components are seated, ie AGP card firmly in place. Does this Asus board have a jumper for clear CMOS? If so verify it is in the right place and not lightly making connection to the clear position. Check the CMOS battery as well, just make sure it is seated. I agree with Gmatov, the polarity on the switched makes no differance, and if the system turned on once before then they must be hooked up right. To test get it running, and push the reset button, if it resets it's correct.
Is this a new power supply? What watt? I have had intermittant PS problems before. New MB correct? Are the capacitors sticking up straight? Have seen leaky caps provide similar issues.
If you can't seem to find anything, disconnect everything from the motherboard except video (use a PCI card if you have one laying around), processor and ram. No HD or CD drives. If computer boots to bios normally repeatedly, start hooking up the perifials(sp) one by one.
