I have been trying to backup my I-Spy DVD using SmartRipper, but on VOB 11 or 12 it says the disc is locked then program closes. I have played it numerous times on my standalone and computer no problem. The only unusual thing about this DVD is that it asks you to choose widescreen or 4:3 when you play the disc. Anyone has suggestions?? thanks.

try a different ripper like DVD Decrypter.

also, if you have more than 1 dvd rom drive, try ripping it from the other drive - I had a problem with backing up RAN, there was one vob that failed in my primary ripping drive.

swapped the disc into my burner, ripped the vob no sweat.

  6. Try just selecting VOB 11 in SmartRipper and see if that works, then go back and do the other VOB's.

  7. this usually helps ijf u play the vobs of the disk, using power DVD, or any other software. Play the vobs for about 30seconds each.

That helps with smartripper, but personally dvd decrypter is loads better.

Why does that help? I'm not questioning that it does help -- I've had to sometimes play a DVD just to get things "started" (and some software recommends this) but I'm curious if any of the pros around here can shed light on what's happening.

I could see if there were data stored in a buffer somewhere that was common to the programs, but there isn't any communication that I can see between, say, a ripper program and a player. So what's going on?

I did try DVD decryptor and it also gave me errors. I did not try to decipher the error. I just figured it must be a bad spot on the disc or the drive. I went ahead ignored the error, ripped it with DVD decryptor, and encoded with TMPEnc to VCD quality. It seems to be playing fine. The 4:3 version ended up being ripped, not the 16:9. Thanks for all your help.
