my computers are not on a network.

i want to switch a cable modem between two computers.

if i name the second computer like the first and use the same ip, can the cable supplier tell.

  2. save yourself some effort and just get a router. The ip will be held on the router and the router well assign new ip's to the computers. And no they wont know.

  3. You can't just name both comptuers the same (and have them plugged in at the same time, if you don't mind swapping the cable back and forth ).

Like Tommy said get a Cable Modem/DSL router. They're all pretty much the same:

    NetGear RT314
    LinkSys BEFSR41
    D-Link DI704/DI804

I recommend the D-Link cause it's the cheapest (~$80 at bestbuy, the others go for ~$130 retail). All of them will allow you to share one IP address, log on at the same time, share files between both PCs, and provide a firewall.
