Stay away from this drive. I had the NEC1100A for about 2-3 weeks and I must say that it's THE WORST piece of hardware i've EVER had. Horrible quality, destroyed many DVD+RW disk that could not be read, erased, or anything. Even after the firmware upgrade, it still was horrible. DO NOT BUY IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!

It was only the Dell version that had problems with rewriting DVD+RW media and you seem to be the only person for which the new firmware hasn't fixed this problem.
The retail/bulk version has never had any of these problems nor have the OEM drives that are based on the NEC like TDK 420N, Plextor PX-504A or HP dvd300.
BTW quite fun to see you writing "stay away from NEC ND-1100" in this thread when you recommend the TDK 420N in another thread (basically the same drive)...

I have the NEC ND-1100A (bulk version) myself and it has worked perfect. The ND-1300A (supporting both + and -) should however be out very soon now (and rebadged versions of this like TDK 440N) so it might be worth waiting for this.

  5. I have three burners and one is the NEC 1100a which works just fine at 4x. Never had a bad burn with the twenty or so Verbatim discs I have burned at 4x.

  8. Just got this drive not too long ago, have yet to have any problems and has worked with every type of DVD and CD I tried.

    DVD+R
    Philip, Memorex, Verbatim

    DVD+RW
    DVD-on

    CD
JUst about anything you can think of including Sony, Imation, Verbatim, TDK, Memorex.

The DELL NEC drives had issues, but all the people I have talked to that purchased this drive seperate have had good luck with it.

  9. I bought an NEC 1000A 2.4x DVD+r re-writer and flashed the firmware to make it an NEC 1100A 4x re-writer (see http://forum.firmware-flash.com/viewtopic.php?t=14416&highlight=nec+1000a for instructions as to how it can be done).

Bought the 1000A for £90 inc. VAT.

    Bargin or what ?
    Cheers,
