I have myself suggested many times that silver topped disk are fine, the normal name for them is usually Unbranded or Thermal printable. Others seem to think it affects the disc lifespan. What do you think?
Of course I'm not talking about a specific brand of media... just any media that has no coat/art on the top of it.

I see no prblem with them, but have seen before (Ritek) have failed about 1 out of every 12-15 discs, in the last 180 verbatuims I have bought I only have had 1 failed and it was the last one in a spindle because of scatches, and since ritek +R's are now $1.60 to $1.80 each I can buy the verbatuims locally for $1.80, so why use the no names, I still use no names for CD's buy 50 pack spindles for $7 to 8 each and they seem to work fine. I buy only GQ's from frys electronics, never had one fail on me yet.

I have actually had no problems with silver top unbranded media, i bought a spindle of 50 disks (PC LINE from Dixons,UK) and all were burned perfectly except one or two cause of my own stupidity but generally i dont have a problem using unbranded media. I may buy another spindle soon and let you know of any changes

I'm most of my way through my first 50 spindle of generic Meritline cheapie silvertops, and I haven't had a problem yet... every time I think I've had a glitch, it's turned out to be a momentary hiccup of the player.

Unbranded is fine just don't write on the top of them. I label mine in the little plastic piece in the center. If you write on top of an unbranded or put your own label on top you're just asking for problems.

my ritek are silver topped... and as usually, those are the best media for the price

For the most part i have had no trouble what so ever!
however, i will say for CD-r that sometimes i get what I call a foil scratch, where the unbranded top gets a scratch or a rip that allows you to see through the disk, they are then destroyed! Other occasions of bulk 200+ cd-r unbranded have had small dimples or holes in the foil that screw up burning, but if you see them before you burn and just toss the disk (only cost like $.08 at bulk rate) your fine. I keep them all in cd wallets for protection after they are burned.
DVD media have had no problem what so ever! Only problems are some unbranded brands are not compatbile with my burner (SD-R5002) and wont work at all, but the ones that are compatible have worked fine thus far!
Horray for unbranded cheap media thats just as good as branded individually cased/wraped media!
