i have a non vcd mpeg i downloaded from kazaa (buffy the vampire slayer episode) supposed to run about 42-43 min. when i first watched it it was fine (the file size is 182 mb) after a few times i watched it with no problem it started to play only about 30 something seconds of the clip and stop. if i move the slider in windows media player let's say to the middle it will say in the counter that it's 00:15 seconds but will show me the middle of the episode (00:21:00 min). no matter where i put the slider once the counter hits about 34 seconds it stops playing. i tried different players - all the same problem. tried mpeg fixers - nothing. when i right click it and view the mpeg info the duration it says is 34 seconds. latle i'm starting to have the same problem with other non vcd mpeg files and i can't watch any of them anymore. anybody ever had that problem? i guess it's something with my system and not the files. maybe a problem with some of my video codacs. i have no idea. anybody?

Sorry, can't help you.
I'm having the same problem as you are but I noticed that it only happens with Kazaalite mpg files. I've tried to death numerous programs to fix it such as MpegCorrector, demuxing it etc but to no avail - most players/editors including high end ones such a Permiers does not recognised the full video.
Only VirtualDUB is able to read the file properly (by parsing each and every frame i think) and playing it fully. You can of course use VDUB to reencode it again... but that means that there is quality loss (unless you use an lossless AVI codec to convert - but the size becomes exponential). Eventually, I've moved back to spyware Kazaa.
Of course, one solution is a player which can parse mpeg1/2 like VDUB. Also, VDUB is opensourced, so a player developed based on its ability to open/parse 'bad' video files is also a possibility. If anyone else have a solution to this such as restreaming a mpeg1/2 video without compression, I would also like to hear what it is. I've heard the term transcoding thrown around - what exactly is this?
Cheers,

johns0,
tmpgenc like 99% other editors/encoders/etc does not read the mpeg1/2 file properly so it is unable to do this. It only reads the first odd part of the movie and not the complete movie. In addition, recompressing as I mentioned before would degrade further the video quality.
