Found that interesting. Hopefully someone else gets it out before 2007.

  2. Hitachi has developed a DVD system with multiple layers, which allows far more information to be stored on a single disk - offering movie lovers the prospect of putting 200 films on just one disk.
umm........ i don't know how this can be commerically marketed. at our current regular prices, 1 DVD movie costs around $20. obviously, we're paying mostly for the movie and not the physical form of the DVD, covers, artwork, etc... because the physical aspects costs the studio at most $1.

if they were to commercially release theses new DVD discs with 200 movies on them...even at $5 each, the DVD would costs $1000...yikes.

Maybe if they sold movies on them, maybe the cost would be prohibitive. But to sell a blank disk that can hold up 199 more movies than the one we use? I see a market.

only real good use i could see would be to archive databases and such (all the newspapers of the world since 1800 in hi-res images sort of thing) ..

This was one of the main uses for laser disks when they first came out -- libraries transfered thier microfilms to laser disk , now the laser disks and rotting out and they are transfering them to other media .. well they should anyway ...

but making such a multilayer disk in low quanities must be expensive - so maybe it is useless mostly .

I agree with BJ_M, the market for using it in archive applications is enormous. All my raw camcorder footage on one or two disks in DV or uncompressed Huffyuv or whatever. YES!

  6. I was actually referring to the article for consumer use. With this technology that means dvd's will fit on one disk instead of two, but that of course is assuming blue-ray or something else doesn't replace dvd's by 2007.

  8. Mmmmm,

If I read it right it’s for putting more films (or data) on one disc, great for the movie industry (box sets of films etc).

But we as users will never be able to burn multilayered discs. So given even by today’s standards a film on a DVD is never the size of the disc and dual DVD sets always have extra's on the other, is there or will there be a new film format to exploit the increased size, and if so can we see the difference on even the best conventional TV’s.

I totally agree with the progression of modern technology, but is it going to be the betamax to vhs storey again, with just increased prices for the most up to date technology.

Blue ray, multilayer burning or cheap DIY pressing would be nice !

But. not going to happen soon !

    Regards
