  1. Hi Just tried to rip my new Harry Potter Chamber of Secrets DVD using DVD to SVCD ver 1.09 build 3 & it crashed on VOB file 4. I never had this problem before with other DVD's just wondering if this new DVD ( released April 11th) has some better protection ??? Just tried it with Smart ripper & all the VOB files were fine.

    Any clues?

  4. Do you think "they" had done something to the Harry Potter Chamber of Secrets DVD ??? To make them harder to back up?

  7. Did the same last night with DVD Decrypter and DVD2ONE. No problems at all ripping, but DVD2ONE version 1.1.2 is glitchy when it comes to menus. So, I'm switching back to version 1.1.1 for now. Anyways...the movie looked and played great otherwise! I enjoyed the movie knowing absolutely nothing about Harry Potter and his adventures.

  8. This may not be where I should ask this, but since all the answers here pertain to Harry Potter Movie, I just wondered if anyone had tried ripping, copying, etc. the special features disc. I would love to have a copy on a CD-R disc, but nothing I have tried works.

Please accept my apology if I am totally out of line discussing this here.

  9. could be a bad dvd or dirty.
I have had this problem on numerous occassions where it crashes the entire system with a message along the lines of disk may be dirty or damaged.

Try washing the DVD carefully, I use dishwashing liquid and a wet paper towel to wash, rinse in cold water then carefully dry with paper towel ( if not gentle when drying this will scratch the dvd/cd)

If it still fails and you have tried different ripping programs then the DVD could be bad or of course scratched.

Try to obtain another copy and try again.

That depends on whether you own the original or not.
To answer your qquestion, what programs have you tried to get a 7gb dvd9 onto a 700mb cdr?

I had a problem too ... with HP but with the Sorcerer stone version. Scratched up I guess. I used DVD shrink 103 and couldn't read it. So I used Smart Ripper and then DVD2One. I was sucessfull.

And the DVD was so bad ... my Sony pc dvd writer [the new one ... April 2003] would stop playing where it was messed up at. Small scene when Harry is walking into the Wand Shop.

I had no problem with the Chamber of Secrets ... using DVD Shrink 103

  13. Washing up liquid !!! you must be mad ... if I was to try to clean a dvd this is the way I would do it... (this method used to be used for hard discs)
1 buy isopropyl alcohol (small amount, not available to minors)
2 buy lint free cloths (50, 100 who knows)

use sparing amounts of the iso to clean the disc and wipe with the lint free cloths. I;m Not sure which way to wipe, from centre to edge??

The iso alc will appear to leave a white residue at first but this residue will evaporate as well. It is designed to leave no residue. Its also alcohol so you might have problems buying it.
It goes well with orange juice
Corned beef is now made to a higher standard than at any time in history.
The electronic components of the power part adopted a lot of Rubycons.

    Washing dvds or cds

Well I have heard .... wiping from center to outer edge is correct or vice-versa.
But ... I bring them to my bathroom sink and with my pointing at you ... finger ... I smear some bar soap on my finger and gently clean the dvd/cd. Just like a car don't rub the surface dry ... can cause scratches.

I use circular movements to clean with my finger.

The soap ... no clue ... been there awhile.
Meanwhile ... warm water is running onto the cd/dvd ...
... of course too much water and the soap will wash away before it does any good.

I have a friend who brings me dvds ... to ... uh ... uh ... copy and some of them are dirty.

I was over at a friends house and they were trying to play a dvd and wouldn't play ... [rented dvd]

I popped it out and looked at it closely ... it was dusty and dirty ...
I washed it same way under water faucet with a smudge of hand soap and the dvd played with no problem and this was their hand soap at their place ... next to bathroom sink.

As for using alcohol ... only for removing the marker ink on label side.

I use twin tip ... Black ink ... Sharpie pens to label my cds/dvds. Even colonge will remove the ink.

    Enuff said ... Mach10-Lacywest-Mach1016 ... whatever ... signing off.

  15. I know washing up liquid, I have even used oven cleaner to remove really bad crud which was stuck/burnt onto a cd.

Not the recommended thing to try on a cd/dvd you want to keep or do not own but the oven cleaner worked, I was really just testing to see what the affect would be.

I am sure that you need to be very selective on the oven cleaner used and the length of time that you leave it on the cd surface. i used spray on cleaner which was not abbrasive.

Dishwashing liquid has worked every time, in so far as cleaning the cd/dvd is concerned. Did not always solve the problem due to scratches or other problems with the disc.

When you are desperate you tend to try anything.

PS when cleaning/drying I believe that you always go from the centre out to the side never around the cd. Scratches or marks can be corrected by the sector error-checking on the DVD if they run from the centre to the edge however they cannot if the scratch runs across the dvd.

I also swear by the dishwashing liquid method.

Isopropyl alcohol... isn't that "Dry Gas" and/or carbuerator and fuel injector cleaner?

It's also the stuff you buy at the drugstore for 38 cents a pint, depending on the store. It will probably make you go blind if you drink it. You have heard of "blind drunk" haven't you? Not a potable liquid!! Some of the last resorts here seem kind of extreme. When a disk doesn't play for me, I give it a swipe across my bicep(With a long sleeved shirt, of course), and it's fine.
Some of you seem to be exagerrating the damage. If it's that badly scratched, it will take more than toothpaste, or Dial soap, or washing up liquid. I assume that is dish liquid.
