  1. I was ripping a copy of my 6th day DVD last night and noticed in the stream processing area that it had a 4:3 aspect ratio version and it can also be set up to play the 4:3 from the DVD Menu.
    How can I rip the files and have the 4:3 ratio authored via TMPGEnc rather than the 16:9 ratio? I clicked on the 4:3 box but after encoding it still has the black bars on the top and bottom.
    Any ideas on movies w/dual screen aspect ratio formats and how do I rip the 4:3 ratio rather than the 16:9. (my tv is older)

    I would try DVD Shrink. Although I love Smart ripper and use it most often, DVD Shrink will give you a visual preview screen in the re-author tab so you can pick and choose exactly which format you want and any extra features you may like to add. e.g. I like to add music film clips from the bonus features from some DVDs to the end of the second VCD after the credits. DVD shrink will allow you to preview these and rip them to a seperate folder. Even if you still want to use smart ripper, it will at least give you an indication of which title branch you want to rip.Hope this helps.

  3. DVDshrink is mainly for ripping DVDs to DVD-R/+R

    --------

    @skljohnson,

    don't EVER trust what smartripper tells you about aspect ratio...it's usually not that accurate...

    ----------------

    if a movie is widescreen, there will be black bars on the top and bottom....you can't really help that unless you wanna crop your video...

    btw, that's the whole point of widescreen is so that you can see the entire part of the screen..and not have parts of it be cropped to make it into full screen

    the best way to tell the source aspect ratio (16:9 or 4:3) is to run the vobs through dvd2avi....(i.e. open the vobs w/ dvd2avi and then press f5)... an info box will appear telling you the source aspect ratio

    -----------------

    for DVDs with both WS and FS on the same side, i do it the old fashioned way...trial-and-error..

    i rip a really small piece of a vob file..then run that through dvd2avi...if the info box indicates 4:3, then it's FS...if dvd2avi sez 16:9, then its WS.

    in smartripper, there will be 2 vob sets of nearly indentical filesize...obviously, one is FS and other is WS...so do trial-and-error..and if the vob set is the wrong version for you, then you know to rip the other vob set....

    --------------

    btw, there are non-anamorphic WS that have source aspect ratios of 4:3, however, whenever i've encountered a DVD with both WS and FS on the same side, the one with 16:9 was always WS and the one with 4:3 was always FS.

  4. An easy way to get rid of the black bars is to use the zoom option if your dvd player has it, it also crops the same amount off the side of the picture but as 90% of the time the main part of the viewing picture is in the centre it dosnt make much of a difference.
