  4. At the risk of looking like I've missed something obvious here: what's the 2.1x barrier? Does it just apply to that drive?

I was just going to say, I have an older (two years) NEC DVD drive that rips happily at 3-3.9x and a split new Pioneer (that fancy slot-loading one) that rips at 8-9x.

Both are using default drivers and firmware.

Have I got the wrong end of this stick here?

    Thanks,

I can only speak of the pioneer 104 & 105,but by default they are locked at ripping no more than 2.1x and only by using hacked filmware can you get past this barrier.

It would be interesting to know what dvd-rw drives out there not locked at 2.1x for ripping like the sony dvdr's are thry locked at 2.1

I have a Lite-On 16x (I think it's the 163 model) that gets up to 10x rips, and I have an old Raite 8x that rips most discs between 5-6x (although it hit a steady 8x on one dvd rip).

by contrast, my Sony DRU-500AX is locked at 2.1

Personally, I would much rather put the wear and tear of ripping on my $40 DVD Rom than a $250 DVD burner.

But, to each thier own I guess
