If in the USA I found Memorex 4x media at Target Stores. Price $22.00 for 10 pack. Works of course with firmware upgrade. Memorex has placed a nice warning in the pack stating which drives require firmware upgrade. Nothing new to the folks who already knew this. I didn't mind paying the price to try a pack out. Worked great, now they need to get the price down.

see... https://www.videohelp.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=158592 for my choice of "cheap" 4x media. Verbatim 4x +r 15 pack for $29.99 at best buy. They work well in my DRU-500a with 2.0e firmware.

  4. I agree with the Verbatim Datalife Plus 4x. They burn in my Sony at 4 times with no problems at all.

Memorex was the worst media I ever bought dvd-r unknown what the speed was.
It only recoreded 1/2 disc 2nd try the result.Obvious problem with memorex can not figure it out.

    Sony media worked and tdk
Tdk being sold in costco canada 4 for $12.95 plus taxes. Produces good results

  6. I'm guessing 4X DVD+R will burn at 4X (15mins or less since DVD+R doesn't take 3 mins to open close session like DVD-R) and will actually work with Sony DRU500ax.

  7. I'll say the same thing, I bought the 4x Verbatim +R 15 packs yesterday...

    $29.99 for 15....

Burned full disks at 15 minutes per disk with firmware 2.0f, I upgraded from 1.0f to use the 4X and it was worth it for the increase in speed.

I have watched already and perfect.

    Cheers

what about 4x Princo DVD media?
I heard they work nice, and you get 100 for 119 dollars at ebay.

  9. princos dont work well.......I have 98 left in a spindle that will only write at x2 (no coasters - but they wont burn at the specified speed).

pity, as I know Princo get bagged, but other than the speed, Ive had no problems.

hm, is there any website or any list that is updated over what brands work at what speed?

what firmware did you try for princo?
    Quote Quote
  11. princo were rated at x4.

Using the latest firmware...sorry, im at work so I cant check but its either 2.0e or f.....whatever is currently the latest....as I said, the x2 work well, as do the x4....they even say they are burning at x4, but they still take the full 30mins....

I asked this question on the forum about 2 weeks ago and was pointed to another site that had dozens of people saying the same thing. Basically, unless the media is listed on the sony website as certified to burn at x4, you will have no guarantees. Your best bet is to track down one and try it before commiting yourself to a spindle purchase...if only Id done this myself!

Nothing wrong with Princo 4X. It's a cheap media and they really burn at 4X! Full dvd-r (lead-in, track, lead out) just over 16 minutes.
    And I've latest firmware 2.0f.
Am I the only one that can burn Princo 4X at 4X??

    Happy burning

Here's the "Recommended" by Sony media link. They don't list the record speed though
