  1. I am archiving home videos of my sons since infancy. I do use generic brand for backing up movies, but for peace of mind, I will only use brand name disc for this special project. Please give me your recommendation. The poll lists media that I can buy at my local Fry & BB stores, but please feel free to comment and to recommend any media that's not on the list, ie. TDK Armor Plated, etc. Thanks for your input.

Either apple, verbatium, or TDK with a leaning toward apple. Also I've not used the TDK armor disk but I heard great things about them well before they made it into the US market.

Wow, I have used near 300 RITEKs, some going on 3 years now and not a problem. Not that I have achieved the hundred year half life test yet. I can not say that about some of the media on your poll question?

Pioneer 1st, Apple 2nd, Maxell 3rd, Optodisc 4th, TDK 5th... then whatever floats your boat after that. It gets pretty mediocre after the first few discs I just listed. And it quickly drops from mediocre to cheapo after that.
I'm not online anymore. Ask BALDRICK, LORDSMURF or SATSTORM for help. PM's are ignored.

  6. Why do people not like the Fuji DVD-R?

I just bought a 5 pack for 12 at BJs and hope to try them out. I had great luck with Fuji's video products (Pro Hi-8 and SVHS), and I do like that they are made in Japan (no child labor and have a lifetime warranty (if it's just a gimmick, then why do the TDKs made in Taiwan only have 1 year.. how many people would go to the trouble of returning 1 bad DVD).

  7. I recently bought some TDK Armor Plate DVD-R's from Rima.com for my home video transfers. The way I look at it, it's worth the extra $2 to have my videos on the most durable DVD-R disk available. Why take a chance with a disk that could be easily scratched? I think it would take a dremel or a die grinder to scratch these Armor Plate disks!

Don't get me wrong, I still use Ritek's for my DVD backups. I'm sure these are high quality disks as well, but the difference here is in 50yrs, you will still be able to get T2 on whatever format (if the backup becomes unplayable), but what will you do if the DVD-R of your home videos gets messed up? Something to think about.

I posted some pictures of the Armor Plate DVD-R's in another thread:

  8. Any idea what material they use to plate the stuff (it doesn't show on the specification pdf)? If you're going to just archive stuff, scratches shouldn't be a concern, but rather things like dust and humidity (you can seal and use dessicants though to mitigate these effects somewhat).

So, e.g. if a manufacturer added extra aluminum to a product for whatever reason, I'd be more concerned about it corroding..
