I am currently using an AVerMedia card to capture to AVI then compressing.

I am wondering whether the WinTV PVR 250 would be better since it has a realtime encoder and save me some time.

  2. It's decent, and you can make a custom template to modify the bitrate/ audio frequency. However I haven't been able to get a resolution change greater than 352*240 (or whatever standard NTSC vcd resolution is). Might have to do with the fact that it encodes mpeg1 progressively. The resolution maxes out at 720 *480 for mpeg2. There are some problems with audio synch with mpeg2s being burned straight to dvds, but that probably has to do with splitting the audio and video files for dvd authoring programs. If you're just looking to do mpeg1 either as a data or vcd disc, I think you should be fine. You should do some searching on shs' pvr 250 boards. they should have some posts one these issues.

Buyer beware. Save your receipt and be ready to take it back. Mine had a funny habit during install of killing my sound cards and IDE Optical drives. This happened on three (3) different brands of mother boards. I didn't learn my lesson after the second time. I still have it... in the box... and in the dark.
