I have gathered from reading this forum over the months that it is better to use a dvd rom to rip dvds with, instead of your burner. My question is, I have a dvd rom (Delta 12X dvd rom) that I used before to watch movies but now it just plays audio cds and will not play dvds, does this mean that it is broken or is there something I should check before buying a new one. Any suggestions are welcome.

Will it not play DVDs or will it not even read DVDs? If dvd info cannot be read via my computer then likely the drive is dead. If it reads them but just will not play them, then its likely a software issue.

Well, I put a dvd in it and starts to try to read it and then it just shuts down.

Its the drive from the sound of it. If its under warranty RMA it, if not replace it with like a Liteon or something.
