I recently took an AVI file and extracted it to Mpeg using TmPGenc. Did the rest (burned, etc....) with Ulead movie factory. Burned to a DVD and it worked great except for one thing. when I play on my stand alone the picture is quite blocky (like you can actually see the pixels) not sure if I am being clear on this explanation, but what I need to do is improve the video qualtiy just a bit. Is this done during the conversion from avi->mpeg......does it have to do w/ Kbits/pixel or whatever? Somebody help me!!!!! thanks

Ok, here the deal. I can not say where you obtained the AVI. Does it look Great when played on your Monitor? If it does, them you need to set your encoding "bit/Rate" to allow for the same quality to be reproduced to your MPG. You did encode to MPG2 and if you did, it should default to something around 4000kb/sec. That should be plenty to encode to MPG2 and reatin the same initial visual quality you see on your screen. Anything less and it will begin to degrade. What you are seeing now is called MacroBlocking. I've done my share of ".avi" conversions to DVD ( MPG2) with good to very good results. It all depends on the you original source. Garbage in, garbage out really does apply here.
No DVD can withstand the power of DVDShrink along with AnyDVD! -
Well, when I play it on my computer it plays wonderfully in a 4in by 5in box, but when I enlarge it to fit the whole screen it then shows this "Macroblocking" it is almost like when you blow up a picture and it loses resolution???? Very subtle Macroblocking, you can only notice it at certain times.

You state:

Is this the AVI file, or the MPEG file? If it is the AVI file, forget it, there is nothing you can do that will significantly improve it. Garbage in, garbage out. If the AVI looks fine at full screen, you can change the encoding parameters in TMPGenc to produce a higher quality MPEG. Some of these parameters are motion search precision, video bitrate and rate control mode. -
Which template did you use when you loaded it into TMPGEnc?
Hello. -
havent read all but...just in case you dont know:
it's blocky also if you burn at a too high speed
