I'm new to the whole DVD burning thing and was wondering if a player that plays DVD+R is backward compatible with DVD-R? However DVD-R only players cannot play DVD+R correct?

DVD-R and + R are not necessarily about backward compatibility. A lot of players play both or just one or the other. DVD-R is the older format yes, but some players that play +R have trouble with -R not because of backward compatability issues, but rather that they are different standards, not an evolution. Check out the dvd player compatibility option on the left to get a list of players that support what.
