  1. here's the problem: Just burned an svcd disc with still menu and chapters created with TSCV 0.73 rel 1. I tested it out on my PC with WinDVD and the still menu and chaptering works perfectly fine. But when i popped the disc into my pioneer 343, the still menu is a black screen, although the chaptering still works. Navigation with the keypad works too. I've already coasted over 6 cds trying to burn this svcd with a still menu. I created the bitmap image with photoshop 6. and then encoded with TMPGEnc using the command button on TSCV. Noticed that the encoding is done with mpeg-2 704x480 MVBR 9800kpbs. Also tried encoding the bitmap myself by loading up tmpgenc settings myself. Patched the menu stream with TSCV to make it a valid still.

I'm not sure what the problem is... could it be that the bitrate is too high for my player to support it? i'm all confused and tired of making coasters. Please, any help is appreciated.

EDIT: tried encoding menu with a lower bitrate (2500)... unsuccessful. please help.

  3. Here is what I found using Nero 5.5 to burn, playing my SVCD's on Pioneer DV 343:

Sometimes the menu works fine, so the player CAN show it.
If there is a second menu page, it is always black.
If the menu background is a plain color defined in Nero, odds are the menu is black. A background picture is likely to be more successful.
If the the bottom part of the menu page contains no items, there is more chance of success.

I like to think computing is an exact art, but I failed to find a consistent pattern in this, so I keep trying, toasting on CD-RW, using CD-R's would have made me poor.

I hope this is of any help.

  4. After you make your still menu MPEG file with TMPGenc you have to patch it from 0xE1 to 0xE1 (the option is under the stills tab of TSCV). This let's the DVD player know that it's a still MPEG and NOT a motion MPEG.

    Hmm, interesting.
But I use VCDComposer with VCDImager...
and instead of loading the bmp into tmpgenc to create the still, I mux the bmp directly with a soundtrack using bbMPEG and specifying SVCD settings, thus creating a very small mpg. Works like a charm.
