Video Artifacts on Set Top DVD Players

Hi all!

I guess I'm a newbie to this, but have enough experience to understand any advice or explanation that you can provide. I have a P4 1.8GHz PC with 1GB RAM, a SOYO Motherboard, running WinXP Pro. My DVD burner is a Sony 500AX. My problem in a nutshell is that whatever DVDs I burn always end up with video artifacts, video and audio glitches, squeeks and beeps, and occasionally just stop playing and return to the main menu. I've used both generic silver DVD-Rs and the Apple media. On all discs, the first twenty or thirty minutes (MPEG2) plays just fine. After that, all the pixelation, choppy video, and sound problems begin to occur. Also, the Apple discs hold out a bit longer, but end up having problems the longer the DVD is played. It's important to note that my set top player is a Panasonic RV-32. Also, the DVDs play fine on my PC.

The video is a recorded program taken off of my ReplayTV using the Extract utility found on the net. I then use TMPGEncPlus 2.5 to edit out the commercials and reencode at their(TMPGEnc Plus) default DVD settings. I've buned the discs using both DVD Complete Deluxe (retail) and the MyDVD software that came with my burner. The problem occurs with both packages. Any ideas? I'm at my wits end with this. I've read through the forums, but am having a tough time with this.

hey stu i've got a similar problem with the replay did you fix yours? if so how?


I've been trying to get something good for a while now. I'm using dvd2avi to get the replay mpgs to work in tmpeg.

No problems at all really with the resulting file. looks/sounds great on the pc.

It's just the few dvd's i've premastered do not look at all well on the tv.

I've tried 720X480 and 352X480

the images on the tv playback are really bad almost vcd quality i'd say.

the easiest i've managed to make it is to take the files from tmpeg and demultiplex them. I use the m2v in sonics reeldvd. and i take the mpa and convert it to ac3 wich works fine in reeldvd as well.

i've just been saving the dvd to disc and using tmpeg to burn the video ts folder it creates. everything works great. just the quality sux when burned.

try a name brand media. Just buy one for the test, they are usually more expensive.

I had similar problem, once I use the HP original media it was all fine.
Since the hp media (dvd+r) was around $5 a pop I opted to buy a cheap dvd player ( I had a yamaha 6258) that is much more tolerant.

hmm worth a shot. i've been using the memorex dvd-rw. maybe i should do a complete format of it. instead of the quick if not i'll try the hp media.

was your hp dvd-r or dvd-rw media?

I have the hp 200i drive. it uses dvd+r +rw
