    These are the seetings which give me the best SVCD quality to view home made movies on my DVD player (PAL) so far:
    resolution: 420x576
    Aspect ratio: 4:3 (although I'm shooting in 16:9)
    Frame rate: 25 fps
    Rate Control Mode: 2 pass VBR (Average: 2500, max 3000 min )
    Motion Search precision: Highest quality

    On Advanced tab:
    Video source type: Interlaced
    Field Order: Top field first (A)
    Source Aspect: 4:3 PAL (again I shoot in 16:9)
    Video Arrange Method: Full screen (keep aspect ratio)

    resolution of course should be 480x576, that nobody has noticed this

    Try also to encode to 352X576
    You will see the same picture, but smoother
