  2. From this site.

    DVD-R and DVD-RW
DVD-R/W was the first DVD recording format released that was compatible with standalone DVD Players.
DVD-R is a non-rewriteable format and it is compatible with about 89% of all DVD Players and DVD-ROMs.
DVD-RW is a rewriteable format and it is compatible with about 72% of all DVD Players and DVD-ROMs.
    DVD-R/W supports single side 4.7 GB* DVDs(called DVD-5) and double side 9.4 GB* DVDs(called DVD-10).
These formats are supported by DVDForum.

    DVD+R and DVD+RW
DVD+R/W has some better features than DVD-R/W such as lossless linking and both CAV and CLV writing.
DVD+R is a non-rewritable format and it is compatible with about 83% of all DVD Players and DVD-ROMs.
DVD+RW is a rewritable format and is compatible with about 72% of all DVD Players and DVD-ROMs.
    DVD+R/W supports single side 4.7 GB* DVDs(called DVD-5) and double side 9.4 GB* DVDs(called DVD-10).
These formats are supported by the DVD+RW Alliance.

Very good Non-judgemental statement of the facts!

Just a few additional things to clarify though...

DVD+R/W's "benefit" of Lossless linking is of no use when doing a DVD-Video title that is burned as DAO. It really only helps with multi-session data burns--that's where the "linking" comes into play. Supposedly, DVD-R/Ws can now also support Lossless linking with DATA, but that may be just marketing of futureware (firmware).
Similarly, the benefit of CAV writing only comes into play with writing Data File backups, as DVD-Video titles MUST be written as CLV.

Also, the DVD-Rs you mention really seem to refer to DVD-R(General). DVD-R(Authoring) supports 3.95GB and 4.7GB single-sided discs, but NOT double-sided discs (yet). Also, the 3.95 discs are compatible with ~93% of players.

I agree with most of what you said in that other post, but must take exception with your labelling of Sony as crap.

This is the way I see it: Sony has at least 3 divisions: Broadcast/Pro Electronics, Consumer Electronics, and Software/Media. The Pro group is rock-solid, probably the best-engineered stuff on the planet! The CE group is split between Hi-end/Prosumer and Lo-end/Bargain. The Hi-end stuff is quite good--Flimsy parts sometimes, but good design. The Low end stuff is driven by the whims of the software/media side, and is usually CRAP.

Sorry, I know it's a little OT from this thread, but I just couldn't let that go this time (I was tempted to reply on the original thread but was too busy).

    Anyway...
