  1. Hi all,

I just downloaded the latest demo form Elaborate Bytes AG CloneDVD 1.1.7.1.

I used both latest verisons of DVDShrink 2.2 and 2.3 and they both choked on Serving Sara. I started looking around again, since I have probably tried anything else and found a software that is very similar to the features like DVDShrink.

CloneDVD did the job and that in about the same time DVDShrink would take for the same size movie. I am burning the movie right now, with Nero. I know CloneDVD got its own burning routine, but I have good success with Nero, so why change if the existing way works.

Before I go and purchase the full verison though I would like to get some input from you guys that have used it.

Actually the burning module is the best part of CloneDVD. It's very subjective but DVD2ONE and DVD95COPY do a much better job of compressing a DVD.

  4. I've also used CloneDVD and it works great. but........ I think is very irritating that you can not remove the grey screens. That is the only "bug" in cloneDVD. I've also used Instant Copy and especially with the cracjk in the registry it works great. Now you can remove the extra's without any problem.

Its not a bug. When you 'keep' the menu but 'delete' the extras meaning you want just the 'movie-only' with the 'menu'... what happen is that extra "time" needs to be filled up.

For example, if you do a full backup with DVD Shrink it turns the extras into still pictures meaning you still have to watch them even thos you used the lowest compression becuase you wanted the movie. CloneDVD does the same this but fills it in with a gray screen instead of still images. You need those 15 sec or whatever it is or the DVD will not play correctly on your DVD player.

As far as transcoding goes, I find that CloneDVD does the best job for high-bitrates (small compression %'s) but that Shrink does a noticeably better job when you're trying to squish a movie a lot more.

My only gripe about CloneDVD is that it isn't an "all-in-one", meaning you DO have to run DVD Decryptor first.

But... Olli has hinted that SOME form of ripping will be included in later versions, and is apparently already in beta testing!

No. Not using it. I wanted a program that had more features like CloneCD, not another DVD9->DVD5 program. I've heard the same comments from others I know.
I'm not online anymore. Ask BALDRICK, LORDSMURF or SATSTORM for help. PM's are ignored.

It does very good job on a movies where not much compression is needed (like up to ~6GB I'd say), but so does DVDShrink or any other transcoder.
But if you are going to backup complete 8.5GB DVD to a single DVD-R wth CloneDVD - thats where it chokes. The picture doesn't look half as good as same done with DVD2One, and it takes twice as much time as DVD2One to do the job.

The good feature is option for selecting output format (standart Video_ts folder. or direct output to disc or output to iso file), something I wish all other transcoders had.
Also GUI is neat, probably simplest and easiest for any newbie.

Lack of ripping capability is annoying in a payware, imagine there are no free software like DVD Decrypter around - would anyone buy CloneDVD and then pay for another program to do ripping? Obviously not, why pay twice if you can buy other software that has both in icluded. Big NO-NO for payware.

    Just a thought.

  10. Thanks all for your comments.

So far I have been happy with DVDShrink, but it has had some issues, especially with new movies.

Define 'new movies', and what are the issues?
