Hello,
I have a G4 dual 1.42GHZ machine.
I have some VCD's I'd like to pull the raw MPEG from without having to compress them etc etc....
How do I do this?
I've looked around and tried pulling the .DAT files directly from the VCD BUT it won't let me.
So, I've made Disc Images of the VCDs via TOAST (Disk Copy wouldn't let me copy for some reason).
So, now, here I am with these VCDs in a TOAST Disc Image format.
What's the best way to get the MPEGS from these things?
Thanks in advance!

This works for (X)SVCD so I guess it works for VCD also:
You can do this with either MissingMediaBurner (GUI front end to cdrdao) or VCD Copy X.
Try MissingMediaBurner 1st because it seems to be faster. MissingMediaBurner has to compete with the Finder for access to the CDR(W) so put a blank CDR(W) to the CD-burner but leave the drive tray still open. In MissingMediaBurner choose Device: CD-R/RW, Driver: generic-mmc-raw (you may have to experiment with your setup). Choose the Output Folder in the RIP DISK panel, check Raw mode, press the Rip-button and immediately close the CD-burner's tray. You get something like mycd.bin as an output file. Launch GNU vcdtoolsX and use its vcdXrip to open mycd.bin and generate *.mpg files that you can author and re-burn as SVCDs with VCD Builder and Toast.

Alternatively you can use VCD Copy X (donationware) to rip the tracks off of a VCD or SVCD as *.dat files, which can AFAIK just be renamed as *.mpg and re-burned as SVCDs. (Compared to the original *.mpg the *.dat file contains some additional navigation information the SVCD needs).

If necessary, you can demultiplex the *.dat or *.mpg files with MoreMissingTools' MPG DEMUX or FFmpeg X, remultiplex and reuse them as *.mpg files.

Hi
easiest method is ............
Save the VCD disk to your HD as an image (.toast) with toast.
rename to .bin
downlaod VCDTOOLSX. Open the program. The 1st button is mpeg extractor. Select the .bin, push extract
its now extracting the .mpeg file.
repeat as needed
Here is a link to the VCDTOOLSX tutorial and how to:
http://www.sbpr.a.se/systemjammers/vcdtoolsx/tools.html
this will also allow you create VCD 1.0 and 2.0 images as well as SVCD images.
enjoy. -
Really? I had no idea you can just rename .toast images to .bin and rip the mpegs...
Interesting indeed. -
Yep, thats what you have to do if you want to do SVCD to DVD
its really quite simple, takes maybe less than a min to 1 min for processing.
Really nice! -
good tips. what is the easiest/fastest way to make a copy of an svcd disc? i always use vcd copy x, change .dat to .mpg then rebuild the disk images and burn in toast. just wondering if there is a faster way. whenever i tried to just copy the disc directly (using 2 drives), i have to burn at 1x (otherwise it will usually error) and everytime a disc would finish, toast would give me some message about there being read errors and i should test the disk.

Takes less than 1 second to rename to .bin
Takes maybe 3 seconds to rename a .cue to match the .bin
then it takes maybe 2 seconds to open MMB
then perhaps 1-2 seconds to drop the .cue into MMB
and it takes maybe 3-4 min to reburn the disk
So a total of 6-8 min plus a few seconds to copy a SVCD disk
Id say thats pretty fast!
