  1. Just for fun, what DVD caused you the most headache when trying to make a backup?

I had a real "my bad" experience with Panic Room. After I split the disc, I only removed RCE from the VIDEO_TS.IFO files instead of all the IFO files. This resulted in some major weirdass playback which had me pulling my hair out. Anyway after about an hour I realized my "user error".

i had lots of trouble with minority report (R2) the disc wouldnt play properly imade the screen go all pink and purple. The Bourne identity (R2) was a pain in the AŁ$E as well, kept screwing up on the last few chapters and starting from the beginning. that was with using ifo-edit and dvd2one ended up re encoding with cce. now i just use instant copy. perfect copies everytime (so far)

Army Of Darkness. Every time I try to get the alternate ending I either get the video OR the audio... but not ALL of the audio. I still haven't worked this one out... (hint! hint!)

Interesting, I thought I was the only man on this planet who had serious problems ripping Snatch. This problem might have been solved using DVDDecrypter latest version since I get the infamous Lite-On bug message ('No vulnerable blocks'). Unfortunately I haven't had the chance to test it with the new version.

My major headaches have been with the ripping process. Some DVDs just don't want to rip: The Matrix, X-Files Season 2.

Tried with Smartripper and DVDdecrypter - no luck.

Bought a new DVD-Rom, and they now rip like Ricki Lake's dress when she bends over!

I've not had the problems with Minority Report or the Bourne Identity that people ahve mentioned. Maybe there are different batches of the originals.

    Regards,

    Rob

When I tried to rip the US version of "Advertising Rules!" (a German movie, the original title was "Victor Vogel, Advertising Man") it gave me some trouble because the disc refused to authenticate in the DVD-ROM. SmartRipper and DVD Decryptor couldn't unlock the drive, and the software DVD player couldn't play it. I tried the standard Windows solution to any random problem (reboot) and the same thing happened. So I tried the other standard Windows solution (try it again) and clicked retry in the dialog box SmartRipper popped up. And the disc authenticated - SmartRipper could read it, the DVD player could play it. I tried a couple more times, and that behavior was perfectly reproducible. I have no idea why.

Of course, the irony here is that SmartRipper and related programs are highly frowned-upon by the US movie industry, but if I'd been trying to watch the movie on the computer the only way I could have done so would have been to use SmartRipper twice to unlock the disc (trying to play the disc twice didn't work).

  10. I'm a newbee.. only 6 rip so far, but Stigmata was my hardest one.

2 Ending, very fat (6.6gig) I sucessfully make a backup using IFOedit and removing all the extra I didn't want, and compress the full disk with DVD2one. Leave only the Menu, 2 language and the alternate ending.

  11. I ran into a problem when backing up the extras on Scooby Doo (R2) the main movie came out perfectly but the extras gave me problems because only the visual parts were being produced & were without any sound files at all,I searched for any type of audio not just .WAV but with no luck.
I tried different progs & settings but couldn't figure the bloody thing out so I just gave up in the end.
This is the only film I've had this trouble with so far thank god,but I've also had alot of trouble backing up porn films because when there are fast action scenes the amount of motion artifacts make it totally unwatchable alot of the time & another strange thing is that when encoded to VCD these artifacts aren't as bad as when encoded to SVCD,figure that one out?
maybe watching too much of this stuff has affected my eyesight

  12. Starship troopers ( flipper ) took me days to sort out. Getting a good quality Harry potter on 1 DVDR, same with LOTR, very happy now after putting the time in.

A porn movie where the extras were actually extra chapters of the main vob set, solved by splitting vobs.

Some of the problems are just a learning curve, no-one knows how to tackle a flipper or split a vob unless they have had to do it. I haven't had any problems ripping though, and have ripped about 120 DVD's so far.

  13. Man you guys must all be good. I've had SERIOUS problems with Independece Day. Tried DVDShrink, DVD2One, DVDdecryptor to dvd2avi, smartripper, tmpedit... Most of the re-encode ones gave me mismatched audio. At this point I'm more of a hack trying to figure it out.

I got my hands on CCE, and a guide. Sometime when I get time, I'll give that a go. Probably will not be for a few weeks. I have a fresh batch of 12 to start into tonight.

  14. well have done over 400 rips using either DVDxCOPY or DVD2ONE and no probs at all until last night, looks like DISNEY is trying something new on its latest DVD, Treasure Planet, Smart ripper errored out every time, I got the newest version of Dycrpter and it took 5 tries before it finally rippd it all and thats after it dropped to .5x rip speed, its seems they have put something on the last VOB, also DVD2ONE, even though its suppose to resize to 4472 actually came back at 4513, just enough not to fit on a disc I had to manually put in 4300 and then it came back 4250, so it sounds like Disney is trying new on this DVD.

I did Independance day no problems.....I just used IFOedit to strip out the languages and then DVD2one to fit on one DVD-R. Quality was excellent and seamless branching parts worked perfectly as well. I only kept the English 5.1 SST though.

Personnely I have been having a tonne of problems and headaches with The Sopranos. The first season has 4 episodes on first 3 discs with avg. of over 50mins. per ep. which causes DVD2One, IC7 to suck in quality.....or at least look bad in my opinion. Using CCE makes good quality but then opened whole new can of worms with making menus. Spruce Up takes the m2v file which was made 16:9 and streches it to 4:3?? Ulead MF 2 desides to increase the size of file even though it is compliant video and ac3 audio. Did not like Neo. Could not figure out Sonic scernarist and guide at doom9 did not cover no extras movies with there guide so I could not figure out.

If I can live with a letterboxed 4:3 sopranos which right now does not matter but when I get my widescreen it will....then I have an idea to get the episodes picture in spruce and make buttons transparent to link to movie.

What a waste of time eh!

I have a disc with an error on it. It cannot play or read past a certain spot. You can watch it by FF past the area then REW to where the disc stops. Then pressing play. It misses a few seconds.

The disc hangs if you try to read, rip, or copy in a DVD-ROM or DVD-R drive. No way to copy it at all so far (trying to make a better copy).

It's the Slayers NEXT Disc 2 from the DVD set.

Any ideas would be appreciated. I've tried everything I can possibly think of.

Is there a visual problem with disk? Scratch or something?

If not I would contact the distributer.

none really apart from a Red Dwarf DVD that had a massive scratch when the DVD tray took a bite outta it and it took loads and loads and loads of polishing to get most of the scratch out

and then DVDDecrypter was reading it at something stupid like 24 kb/s for absolutely ages

eventually I got the complete DVD ripped and made a nice working backup

Just did Treasure Planet (movie only) with DVDShrink 1.03, and ripped perfectly in about 10 minutes.

Nothing visual. It's an authoring error on bad-pressed media from what I've read on that exact disc from that exact manufacturer. But the company is Asian, and no longer around. Had this before DVD-backup was possible. Somebody else now releases that show, and no help from them either.

If there was a DVD program like Clone CD with fast error-skipping, I think it MAY be possible. But so far, I'm not aware of any cloning software for DVD. The Nero Copy-DVD feature is not working, giving me frisbies. I try on a DVD-RW every now and then. Wasted too many -R discs way back when.

    txpharoah,

DVDDecrypter has a setting for detecting mastering error. Maybe this might help or would be worth a try if you have not tried it yet?

Behind Enemy Lines, still cant get it, for some reason I get no audio after ripping movie to hard drive. And its only the movie, the features and extras all play with sound. I tried it with DVDDecrypter, Smart Ripper, and DVD Shrink, all with the same results.

vstrip was confusing - but it was something I had wanted to try... just have not had the time yet to tinker with it.

However, it's probably still a disc thing, and the readability is the main factor, not the program trying to read it. If something just had a fast error-skip that worked, maybe. I keep trying when something new comes out.
