  1. I just upgraded to DVDMF2, and I'm getting a weird problem:

I'm trying to create a DVD. After adding video files, I click NEXT to go to menu authoring. The large box on the left which should contain a sample of my menu is all gray, and when I try to select a template, the program crashes with:

DVDMF caused an invalid page fault in module MFC42.DLL at 0167:6c174043.

Predictably, the Ulead support site has no mention of this problem. Any help is greatly appreciated.

  2. Well, since it appears that I'm the only person who's ever experienced this problem, can anyone give me suggestions on how to troubleshoot it?

I've already checked MFC42.DLL to make sure that it's the current version, and I checked for other versions on my system which may be conflicting (found none). I also have made sure my DirectX version is up-to-date.

    What else?

    Thanks!

  3. I have done some further testing and discovered a clue, but still have no idea where to go next (I have written to Ulead tech support, but who knows when I will hear back).

The problem only occurs when authoring from MPEG files. If I load AVI files, no problems. In fact, if I load an AVI first and then an MPEG, no problems. But if I load an MPEG first and then an AVI, the problem occurs.

Bear with me here: If I load an AVI, set it to First Play, then load an MPEG, the problem occurs. But If I load an AVI, load an MPEG, go to the menu screen (all is well), then return to the previous screen and mark the AVI as First Play, all is well. This leads me to believe that the problem is related to the creation of the thumbnail frame for the first menu item.

That leads me to think that something in the MPEGs might be bad. We all now know about various problems in files coming from the PVR-250, so I have tested with files coming out of other applications, specifically Vegas Video, encoded with the MainConcept encoder. Same problem.

I tried running various test utilities on these files to see if anything bad is detected, but nothing. The files appear to be good.

This screams BUG, BUG, BUG -- but why me?? I'm a good person. My system is very happy. But there must be some component out of whack, and I'll be damned if I know where to start.

    Auuuuggghhh!!!

    Hi, rixware!
I assume that you are using mpeg2 files for creating your dvd. Have you tried encoding your First Play movie to mpeg2 too outside of UMF2? Or trying the main movie alone?
    Good Luck!

  5. Just wrapping this up in case someone else has this trouble. The problem turned out to be related to incompatibilities with other authoring software (and the codecs they installed) on my system.

To find it, I used this amazing little utility which allows hot swapping of video codecs:
