I'd like to ask around here, and I'm going to ask a "newbie" question, only because it might solve my "non-newbie" type problem.

I'm getting motion stutters on some encodes, now seemingly more than ever. Motion Estimation on TMPGEnc is always on "Highest-Slowest", and usually works good even at low bitrates.

Now I'm curious... does a fragmented drive effect ENCODING? As in, the program requests info, it's not forthcoming fast enough, so it jumps to the next bit it can find in time? I have no idea if this makes any sense, but when I analyze my drives, both do require a defrag.

    Ayone else run into this?

  2. I don't think tmpegenc is time-sensitive; otherwise it wouldnt take ten hours The defrag should affect the time it can take to encode and the performance of time-sensitive playback.
What kind of settings are you using? which tmpeg?

Also it could be interesting to use Bitrate Viewer to try to check whether the bitrate is indeed maxed at that point in time.

I think you're right... I was wondering why my encoded video always stuttered at the same place every time I played it via PowerDVD, I was assuming all this time it was because of the encoding process.

Oddly enough, I watched the movie in question on my standalone player (while the computer defragged), and sure enough, the motion stutters weren't there! In fact, the movie had NONE!

So I guess I've learned several lessons here... thanks.

Oh, on your question on settings, I thougt I'd post them since they do seem to work right on my Apex 500-W after all...

    352x240 res (SeVCD)
MPEG-1 (VBR 2-Pass, 0, 850*,and 2300) *the "AVG" will change based on how much you need to fit on a disc
    NO MOTION SEARCH HALF PX
    NO DETECT SCENE CHANGE
    SOFTEN BLOCK NOISE ON
    Audio Layer-2 112k Stereo
