  1. I have recently been trying to Rip the LOTR DVD to one of the computers at school. I have been using a program called DVD Extracter and it seems to work great, theres only one problem: It rips the files so they are unreadable. It makes them a VOB type file and my machine cannot read it. So, how might i go about ripping a file, on a mac, to a .mov file? any ideas?

perhaps there is a vob to mov converter or something... hmmm

What os are you running at school?

IF you are running OS 9, give yade a try, it's a much better ripper in my opinion, much easier to work with.

I dont know if this is an option for you, but it worked for me while I was at college and the macs were g4's and fast (but only has OS9on them!!)

    Need:
    1. Carbon Copy Cloner (http://www.bombich.com/software/ccc.html)
    2. iPOD
    3. Partition for installing OSX or a current drive with OSX on it whose clone will fit onto your iPOD

    Step 1 (optional)
Install a fresh copy of OSX to a partion, boot from that and run through all the set up (note the account/passwords becuase this is what you will use later to long into OSX on the macs at school)

    Step 2
If not installing to a new drive, simply connect your iPOD to your MAC. If installing to a partion, reboot back to your original drive. Then connect your iPOD to your mac.

    Step 3
Clone your drive to your iPOD using carbon copy cloner (either the partition you just installed OSX to or your current HD that you normally boot from)
NOTE: if doing your current HD ensure that you have enough space on your iPOD for this clone. Example: If its got 30 gigs of space used, it wont fit onto your ipod. Thats why i recommend using a partition.

    Step 4.
Disconnect your iPOD and take this now to the OS9 school computer. Connect this to the OS9 comptuer, and from the apple menu go to control pannels/startup disk. Select OSX on the iPOD and reboot

now you are in OSX on the school computer. Your iPOD is essentially a HD and any data you save will go to the iPOD. Or you can save directly to the OS9 HD if you dont have enough space..

I would do this with 10.1 because there were several programs i liked to use that were OSX only but I wanted to beable to utilize the dvd burner and speed of the school macs. (plus an advantage is you are the admin user so there are no security features limiting you like there may be since its a shared computer )

Perhaps this can help you if you have an iPOD (especailly since there are a LOT of applications for OSX that can do a better job at ripping dvd's and processing them than on OS9.)

    peace
