  1. I am very new to this so please forgive me if I'm asking an old question, I could not find any answers doing a search of this forum.

I have been trying to Rip the Star Wars Episode 2 DVD to my Mac. At home running OS 10.2.4 & 10.2.5 on my B&W G3 w/G4 upgrade, I got many errors using both DVDbackup & OSeX. The result was that four or five of the "VOB" files were incomplete.

I then took the same disk to work and tried using DVDbackup under 10.1.5 & 10.2.5 on my G4 and there I got only one "VOB" file that would not complete.

My question is: Are there some disks that are just difficult? Am I doing someting wrong? Should I try Extractor?

    Any help would be appreciated.

You are doing everything properly. Perhaps the disk is dirty?!? or scratched?!?

I would suggest just trying to rip it directly to a .vob (not a dvd backup) with OSeX - to see if you can even do an elementary rip.
I have successfully backed up StarWars Episode II (the movie disk) to both with dvdbackup and OSeX.

Try just a simple rip using OSeX to a progressive or elemental streams. If that doesnt work and you get errors, clean the disk.

Thats about all i can think of at th moment.

Some disks will give you errors, but its usually because of scratches or fingerprints/dirt on the disk which causes the lens to bounce all over the place.

Rinsing the dvd with warm water and wiping with a shaking any excess water off - followed by wiping with a lent free cloth is my proven method for that. Stubborn ones I will soak in soapy water and then rinse with warm water and shake/wipe as above.

Hope some of this offers help.

  3. Having a problem with the bonus disk on HPII.

    DVD Backup wont work
    OSExa1 doesnt work.

Played with copying the Jacket file and others to the location of rip but still get errors.

additional research:, The only part of the DVD that wont come over to the hard drive using DVD Backup is the Video Title Set 11, I get a message saying "Decryption Problem .... Failed to decrypt Video Title Set 11. Skipt it and continue, or stop processing?

    These files consist of:
    12kb bup
    12kb ifo
    0 kb vob
    1.5mb vob.

Can get all , except these 4. Wondering if anyone else was able to do the HPII bonus disk? Will put to DVDRW, and see how it looks, or works without. The files copied over with just copy, but not with enryption undone..

  4. Thanks for your help galactica,

I think my problem with Star Wars II is a scratch in the disk that is not bad enough to cause me problems on my DVD player, but is bad enough to stop me from ripping it. It is just further proof to me that I need to be backing these things up. I am contemplating using the DataDr. buffing device on the disk to see if I can get it done, but I'm afraid of damaging the disk more.

I also tried to back up the HPII bonus disk with no success, it probably has to do with it not being a standard movie disk.

P.S. I Love This Forum, thanks & congrats to everyone on here who helps and innovates to make our platform of choice better.

Believe it or not, but if you rub a small amount of toothpaste (regular paste, not gel) on the dvd lightly with your finger and then rinse it off with warm water, followed by the air dry or shaking dry then wiping off, it can help hide the scratch.

Give that a try and see if it helps the scratch.
