I am trying to convert my DV-AVI-files to DVD.
The first results created a DVD with Mpeg-1, 2ch, 48Kbps 16bps (this is what Ifoedit tells me.
This DVD does not play the audio on my standalone Toshiba SD220e-Player.
The output on the player is set to bitstream, when i change that into PCM everything works fine.... but then i would have no digital-suround any more, and i would like to avoid to go into the setup each time i change the DVD.
(The audio is connected via optical-digital to my receiver).
Now, there is one setting in MovieFactory2: In ProjectSettings i simply deselect "Do not convert compliant MPEG files".
With doing that, MovieFactory does an additional conversion, and then i can see with IfoEdit: Linear PCM, 2ch, 48Kbps 16bps on the DVD.
This one plays without problem.
Now here is the question: Can anybody tell me, how to do the correct steps upfront, to automatically get this PCM?
Does anybody now, why i do not hear anything with Mpeg?
Thanks in advance !

Where do you live, in NTSC land maybe?. Not all US (NTSC) DVD players support mp2 audio as it is not required by the DVD psec for that region. DVD players from ALL regions support PCM audio. The main problem here is that it is uncompressed and so takes up loads of space, meaning less space for video, meaning lower bitrates required, meaning lower quality.
You could always learn how to convert the audio to Ac3 (again, supported by all players). I believe BeSweet can do this.
Hope this helps -
I have PAL, not NTSC.
And i would have no problems with PCM, but obviously all guides here show, how to create Mpeg-Audio.
Even if i take MovieFactory, add the video, and then exchange the audio with a file where i am sure it is PCM, it still will not play. I have to deselect the option "Do not convert compliant MPEG files".
What i would like to do, is to give any author-program the correct files in the correct format, but i do not know how to do that. -
Ok, I have just re-read your original post and realised the problem. And I don't think there is much you can do about it. I have a similiar setup (PAL - dvd player connected to AV amp/decoder via optical). My DVD player has an option to output mp2 as PCM and my AV amp auto detects the type of input (PCM, Ac3 or DTS). If your DVD player/Amp cannot do this I am afraid I see no solution other than changing settings according to the disc type being played, sorry.
I don't think its anything to do with the way you are authoring the discs.
Edit - Just had a thought, surley if you use PCM audio, set your DVD player to 'bitstream' your amp should cope with this. -
You are absolutly right, i use PCM audio (which should be most compatible) and i set my DVD-Player to bitstream, and i have audio, if there is PCM on the disk.
But here is my problem:
If i use MovieFactory, add the video, replace the audio with the definitiv PCM-coded audio, and then burn the disc, i then can see with Ifoedit, that there is MPEG-Audio in !
Also my Decoder/Amplifier tells me MPEG.
Only if i deselect the option "Do not convert compliant MPEG files", then Ifoedit tells me, that the disc has PCM-audio, and only with deselecting this option i have audio.
And that's what i do not understand. -
Hmm, seems like MF is either encoding the audio to mp2 or is telling lies in the Ifo it creates. You should be able to tell if it is the former by the final size of the vobs compared to the original mpeg. If the vobs are smaller it is re-encoding. In this case all I can suggest is either search the MF options to see if you can force it to use PCM, or use a different authoring package. If it is the latter (wrong data in Ifo) then try changing it with Ifo Edit before burning.

Great tip.
My mpeg (with MPEG-audio inside) is 154Mb.
If i have the option "Do not convert compliant MPEG files" activ, the vob is almost the same.
If i have the option "Do not convert compliant MPEG files" deselected, the vob is 183Mb, and while creating the output MovieFactory puts an additional step in, and says " Converting audio tracks of videos".
So i think, either i have to find a solid way to create PCM upfront, or i simply have to use a different program instead of moviefactory....
Thanks for your help !
