I'm looking to buy a player that players DVD, DVD-R, VCD and SVCD. I would prefer a top brand i.e. JVC, Toshiba, Pioneer etc, etc. I'm in the UK. Any recommendations? I've been through so many websites and everything gets a best buy! I have no idea which one to go for. I don't want a Sony player as my father has one and it sucks and I hate the menus.

If you want to go for a brand name player, try Pioneer. They are very good units generally.
I don't know about the UK, but in Australia, the Pioneer DV-355 is a multi-region DVD player that supports CD-R/W, VCD, SVCD, and DVD-R. I've got one and I'm very happy with this player.
