I have alot of VHS tapes of family events I want to put on cd and make a vcd. Can someone tell me what type of sound or video card do I need to transfer my vhs tapes to my computer?

Depends entirely on how you want to capture them.
If you have a Canopus ADVC or other firewire capture product then you only need a firewire port on your PC.
Therwise, you're goung to be capturing using a video/capture card, comparisons of which are found here:

It's for VHS to DVD but the principle is the same.
