    Hi,
Using DVD2SVCD and viewing on a Widescreen HDTV.

My DVD is a 16:9 and the Conversion Tab of DVD2SVCD selects that automatically. After the conversion I noticed that the viewing window on the TV is squished more from the top and bottom for SVCD compared to DVD.

It is as if, SVCD has a wider 'black' bar on the top and bottom of the viewing window.

    Question:
Why is the viewing window on the TV squished for SVCD compared to DVD. What setting should I change for DVD2SVCD to fix this.

    Pls help

    Hi,

    Problem solved.

I got the tip from others on the Doom8 forum.

For DVD2SVCD, in the conversion TAB, use the setting (4:3 encode and no borders) for a 16:9 movie. If you leave the default, which is (16:9), you will get additional borders that will squish the viewing window.

So 4:3 encode with no borders worked great for a widescreen mode..

I don't have a widescreen tv but if the original DVD is anamorphic I have noticed in last few releases of DVD2SVCD that there is a new choice which is I think the one you should be using "16:9 anamorphic"

    Hi,

Others had commentd that the anamorphic seeting in DVD2SVCD may not be supported by most stand-alone players. So I have not tried that ...

  6. The SVCD standard does not support anamorphic discs (althought in theory it can be done). VHS, VCD, SVCD, and CVD are all 4:3 only.

When you backup a 16:9 source with DVD2SVCD it re-encodes it to a 480x480 letterboxed 4:3 video. Because it's letterboxed (resized to 480x360 + 60 borders on both sides) it shows up as boxed on all four sides on a widescreen TV.

This presents a small problem. Because if you try to play that non-letterboxed SVCD on a 4:3 TV it's DAR will be incorrect the picture will not look right. So you're making widescreen or normal TV only discs

Only (true) way around this is to get a DVDR drive, sorry
