I received a 16X DVD drive for Christmas in '01 (Pacific Digital, works great!). In the year and a half (give or take) since, I've yet to see a faster DVD drive on the market. Why? Is there no market for a faster DVD drive, or is 16X thought to be so fast that there isn't a need for a faster drive? Or is it some technical limitation that your average Joe like me doesn't understand off hand? Assistance in understanding is appreciated. 8)

I have this same PD DVD drive I bought a month ago for the new puter system i built to play movies on....and as of date i have yet to see a DVD drive faster than 16x...but i wont be suprised if they do come out with a faster drive in the future. Currently this drive works great for me...and especially when it comes to ripping DVD movies it works like a charm speed-wise.
VideoTechManI have the staff of power, now it's up to me to use it to its full potential to command my life and be successful. -
YOu have to remember that the actual data read rate on a 1x DVD-rom is WAY faster then a 1x CD-rom. Therefore the actual spin in cd terms of a 16x DVD is very very fast. Its not likely that the spin will go up much if at all.

I think 1xDVD-ROM=8xCD-ROM(or 1200KBps) so 16xDVD-ROM=128xCD-ROM(or 19200KBps).Technically it's possible to transfer at an ATA speed of 133000KBps(122xDVD-ROM)
In the future I'm sure we will see faster DVD-ROMs due to faster controllers and stronger lasers, that's if they make indestructable media. -
Yeah once a CD exploded in my 48x drive and stabbed my ass because the plastic face plate blew off on the force of the exploding CD.

IIRC CD-Rom 1x = 150kb/s and DVD 1x = 1380kb/s so that's 9.2x faster. So a 16x DVD-ROM has a top speed (which I've never seen it reach) of 22MB/s, compared to a 52x CD-ROM which is only 7.8MB/s.
Also all you need to watch DVD Videos is a 1x drive. In fact a fair number of low end/cheaper standalones are 1-2x PC IDE DVD-ROMs with an external cases.
The highest I normally get when ripping DVDs is 11x (I once got a max of 15.5x). But normally things rip at 4-6x -
Keep in mind that the increase in data rate over CDR doesn't mean the same increase in revolution speed. a 16x DVD is spinning at 9,200 RPM or so, with a throughput equivalent to a 150x or so CDR. That's about tops for this technology, so I'm just waiting until I can WRITE at that speed.

I never get tired of hearing about someone stabbed in the ass with a cd-rom faceplate."Mustard?! Don't lets be silly now. But lemon, thats different, thats nice." - The Mad Hatter -
Its wasnt actually the face plate.
it was a fragment of the cd. still hurted like a bitch though... -

No, I was installing something, stood up, turned around, and the thing exploded. My PC case is right on the desk and the burner is right on the same level of my ass.
