I have been doing the followings successfully all the time:
1) output to DV camcorder a video footage edited with Studio DV
2) re-capture that tape back into Studio DV
The recaptured AVI file play fine with Windows Media Player and Studio DV software.
Yesterday, strange things happened, I worked on a different video footage and the recaptured AVI file is not recognized by Windows Media Player. It cannot be opened by Studio DV software either even this software captures it !!!
Can anyone with Studio DV software knowledge help ?
Thanks

Sounds like somewhere between here and there the file was corrupted. I have heard that it is possible to corrupt a dv file. Actually I think it even says that in the camcorder manual that it can happen....probably won't but it can happen. If you can play the file on the camcorder, I would suggest trying to re capture and start again. It could be when you recaptured the file from the camcorder, the computer (or camcorder) had a problem. Like any other large data transfer its not very common but possilbe.
If you can't play the tape on the camcorder, I think its just gone. Sorry Can't be of much help, its never happened to me, i'm just guessing.... -
I have tried to recapture that tape 3 times to no avail. Studio DV always quit near the end leaving a corrupted AVI which that stupid software does not even know how to read.
The tape plays fine on the camcorder.
Since the original is still in the computer, I simply re-output it to video again then recapture and made a nice XVCD from it. Oops.
My video method is:
capture the original footage in the PC,
edit it
output back to another digital tape (never to the source tape. I did that once and lost everything!!!)
then recapture to get the edited AVI
then convert to MPEG with tmpgenc.
burn CD then play back in the DVD player
If everything works, then I deleted all those captured videos for that project from my hard drive, making room for the next project.
This way, if anything goes wrong, I can backtrack one step at a time. The worst is to go back to the original video tape.
