I have tried Virtualdub - No problems with the video encoding, but i cant install lame mp3 or any other ac3 or mp3 codec in Windows Xp.
    Suggestions?

If I cant use Virtualdub -What is the best method to do the sound compression part then? Can I do it in Premiere?

Why can't you install any codecs? They all work with XP. Use VirtualDub to create the video stream. Encode your audio, and use NANDUB to multiplex them together.

  3. Thanks it works now.

I foun out there are a dos version and a 'codec' version of lame mp3.
i tried to run the dos version. I also had to uninstall some other mp3 codec. But then i could install Lame mp3 in Win Xp and use it in virtual dub.

Lame is what I use as well. I've got the professional version somewhere on my archive, but I never bother encoding in MP3 anymore. Create your DivX with VirtualDub. I'd suggest you use 2-Pass. The output will look much better. The bitrate kinda depends on your resolution, but as a rule of thumb, anything above 700kb/s will look good. Create your audio with BeSweet, or TooLame, and then use NANDub to select both your Audio, and Video sources, then select FILE | SAVE AVI. Takes a few minutes, and your done.
