Hi gang,

I have been trying for 2 days to rip a foreign film with english subtitles... it has been horrible. I follow every guide on this site, and have tried a few ways to get the job done.

I couldnt get Mflask to work and then proceeded to flexion's website and fell into a roadblock when I couldnt get TMPGEnc to accept the .vdf file I created in the frameserve.

I proceed to Doom9 site only to discover that flexion's was the more detailed of the two.

I proceed to the forum to find that most of the posts on subtitle problems have 0 responses or are 2 people with the same problem talking back and forth amongst themselves.

could there be an entire section devoted to subtitles on your fabulous website? As of now it is a sidebar topic...but the increasing amount of forum threads miht show that it is not so easy for most of us...

Mummy, Jet Li, Chow yun fat, Traffic and hundreds of other movies are ruined for me by MY inability to conquer this Subtitle hurdle. =(

Even movies I thought were perfect end up ruined... I never knew how much subtitles were used in movies... IE: I am a huge Star Trek fan... but I have not yet mastered Klingon =D

Is anyone else interested in a SUBTITLES FOR DUMMYS section?

I know you expect no replies - but I thought I might give you an alternative website, that explains things with lots of graphics and an easy to understand language (not just for subtitles):

The easiest and most foolproof way of getting subtitles is to use FlaskMPEG.

Firstly you will have to rip the ENTIRE DVD structure, best with DVD Decrypter or if using SmartRipper, make sure you use "File Mode".

Make sure you copy over the relevant IFO file as well.

Now, use FlaskMPEG to load the IFO file and choose the relevant video track, audio track and subtitle. Note, subtitling is not perfect and won't work on some titles. However, make sure you try both the latest v0.6 preview and v0.594. Also, there is a version of FlaskMPEG 0.594 out that has been "subtitle fixed". It can confirm that this works for some titles (e.g., Region4 Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon) that don't work with the other versions of FlaskMPEG.

well , you should check yourself if you want the subtiles as part of the video stream or maybe you want the subtitles at a different stream like in dvd
for that you need to be using iauthor

I think it would help if the EDIT section of the HOW TO menu over there mentioned that they have stuff on subs in there. People often ask basic questions on subs that can be answered in there but it's just not intuitive to look in there. The only really I ever learned about the sub filter in TMPGEnc was 'cause I saw it in the news section when it came up.
