  1. I am a newbie at this and am using a sony dru500a (no firmware updates) with win xp.

I have been backing up dvd9 to dvd5 and i was recommended to use dvd decryter then instant copy https://www.videohelp.com/forum/userguides/141024.php.

I have been able to backup several of my dvd's successfully but now i have hit a problem.

I was backing up an ex rental copy of 24hr party people and everytime i read the dvd with decrypter there is an error. Two small VOB files cannot be read and the error states there are no vulnerable blocks.

I used instant copy anyway but without these two files the back up fails.

I was told that using smartripper instead of decrypter could solve the error problem - is this true?

Also there has been a lot of hype about this DVDshrink. Is this software good or not??

Is there a solution to my problem or is it just bad luck with this particular dvd??

    Thanks for all your help

  2. That is definitely a read error because of damaged media or dirty media. i would was that media off with windex, soak it for 10 min and use tissues to gently rub it clean. then run cool water on it and gently wipe the excess water off. It it still errors out, the disc is at fault for damage and scratches.

Using SmartRipper is certainly worth a try, considering it's freeware.

I was just trying to backup the restored Metropolis, and DVD Decrypter kept freezing at about 6% of the rip.

    SmartRipper had no such problems.

I will say though, that's the first time in about 40 discs that DVD Decrypter couldn't do the job....

If you are into buying used rentals, then invest in a disk cleaner. not the windex kine. Get one of the green hardcore ones sold at gamers shops. It's big and about $30 US, but it wil buff out deep scratches. I've taken disks out of the trash and gotten them to read error free, CD and DVD.

  6. I use netflix and the windex works fine. If windex doesn't do it, the disc is badly damaged

  7. thanks for the advice on cleaning it up.

I used smart ripper and everything seemd to be fine (maybe just a very small glitch with dvd decrypter). The only big problem now is that i don't know how to shrink it.

usually i would use instant copy but the software is not picking up any of the ripped files. What is the best software to use after smart ripper?

    thanks

  9. I absolutely agree. This software is incredible. I find that the best way to use it is to just take the main movie, not all of the extras.

  10. woodentom, I used all freewares.

I was able to burn over 250 dvds using DVDDecypter to copy to my HD. Then us IFOEdit to either cut the movies in two if it's larger then 4.7 gig and if it's under 4.7 gig then I just burn the movie immediately after it's on my HD.

Check this guide site....have all the good guides.

I found the best way to clean a cd dvd is tooth paste, just put a blob on your finger and rub into the cd, dvd, i had some disks totaly un readable and after this they are fine, dont rub to hard though.
